“Why Do You Need A Doula? You Will Have A Baby Monitor & A Nurse 40 Feet Away.”
“Why do you need a doula? You will have a baby monitor and a nurse 40 feet away.” – OB to mother.
“Why do you need a babysitter? You’ve got a television and neighbors next door.”
Yeah, it’s not the same as having someone there the whole time to take care of them and meet their needs, is it?

Do you have a monitor that can massage my lower back? That can help me change position? Oh, that’s right, the monitor means I have to lie still the whole time! Have you ever SEEN a doula-assisted birth, Doctor? Or are you being deliberately dense?

Unless that nurse has go-go-gadget arms she’s not going to be much use from 40 feet away while minding other patients. As a doula I spend probably 90% of my time providing massage, counter-pressure and other hands-on assistance. And let’s just not get started on the whole replacing-nursing-care-with-MONITORS insanity.

Why? Let’s see. I’m going to be stuck in this hospital bed because you won’t “let” me do anything else. You will be nowhere to be found. The nurse will be 40 feet away. When you or the nurse are proven to be idiots (I mean AFTER the question you just asked), I’ll need someone who can go play “slap the idiot” for me.

“Because a “baby monitor” and a nurse across the hall are not capable of providing me with continuous physical and emotional support. Furthermore, they are clinically proven to improve birth outcomes, and the results of the studies show that it must be someone who is not affiliated with the hospital. I’ll e-mail you the copious research that’s been over the past couple of decades.”

I need a doula to keep you in line and to prevent you forcing procedures on me just because your late for diner or golf.

Or to fatten the hospital’s and/or your personal pockets with unnecessary interventions/procedures.

EEeekk! It’s not the doula’s job to advocate for you or interfere with the doctor in any way. If she does that she won’t be welcome at the hospital for very long.
A doula’s job is to support mom. The best she can do as far as advocating goes is reminding YOU (not the doctor) of your preferences (example: “Mary, the doctor is offering you an epidural. You stated in your birth plan that you wanted to avoid epidurals and you would request one if you changed your mind. The doctor is concerned about X and is suggesting one. What do you want to do?”), or asking the doctor for time for you to decide what to do. If she stands up to the doctor and gets between him/her and mom she gets booted from the room pretty quickly, and if not, she develops a hostile reputation and won’t be taken seriously.
Don’t make the mistake of hiring a doula to advocate for you. If she’s a good one, she won’t do it.
