“Well, We Don’t Want You Suffering.”
“Well, we don’t want you suffering.” – OB to mother who was refusing pitocin after being at 9 cm for 45 minutes.
Translation: we are tired of waiting around. There’s no medical problem with the mother or the baby, so how can we pitch this to the mom to get her to do what we want?
Of course! Tell her we want HER not to “suffer” and we just won’t mention that ugly little fact that pitocin increases risk to her and the baby, and typically increases pain levels.

Pushing for Pitocin after only 45 minutes at 9cm? Aren’t you supposed to dilate 1cm an hour? So doesn’t she at least have 15 minutes left before her body becomes broken?
Good grief. This is just one of those ridiculous comments. I can’t stand the stupid! Lol!!!

And after 45 minutes at 9 cm you only get 8 minutes of pushing once you hit 10 cm. What happened to that rest period when the uterous has to contract down around the baby as he/she drops past the cervics? Go have your coffee, come back in an hour!

suddenly my labor with DS makes sense! (this is almost completely OT BTW) i asked them to break my water and after THAT flood, i had no contractions for like 15 minutes- and the nurse was getting antsy, of course we just got up and walked so it was fine, but thats the time it took for my uterus to adjust to the smaller volume it was holding before it got back to business!
i’ve read plenty about that before i just never made the connection.

This was my story. I was in having my second child. I had only been at the hospital for about 3 hours. I had my partner and my doula. When I cam in I was at 6cm. I didn’t have so much as an IV. The nurse had never even seen a totally med-free labor and delivery and was astounded (sad, huh?).
The OB came in when I was “stuck” at 9cm. He told me that he wanted to start Pit. I asked why. He said this. As I was stating that I wasn’t suffering, he said, “Oh, your water hasn’t broken. Well, we’ll try that first.” Within 10 minutes I was pushing, and within 45 minutes of that, Chloe was born.

I will add too, that she was born at 10pm, so it was about time for him to go home.

Definitely the doctor felt he was missing his one and only chance to be the hero of the day. If you didn’t need him, clearly his entire life was a worthless mockery. **/sarcasm**
I’m sorry these people were rushing you. You were doing fine and they felt the need to tinker.

Yea I don’t get the suffering comment. I never felt in my labors that I was SUFFERING. In pain, yes, at times. Intense feeling, definitely. Suffering, not at all.

When you actually are, suddenly, all the ‘heroes’ disappear, speaking from experience

Only because pregnant women (especially first-time moms) are only exaggerating, lying, or don’t know what they’re talking about. :-b Then we get told suffering is a part of motherhood and we should shut up and do whatever they say is best for our baby.
