“Ugh, Look, She Keeps Peeing Everywhere.”
“Ugh, look, she keeps peeing everywhere!” Certified Nurse Midwife during mother’s pushing phase.
Ugh, look, she’s making distracting comments during mom’s labor.

This is one post i really hope the mom comments and adds in the actual story input. What position was mom in? Who was present? Why on earth was the CNM so astounded by this? Why was the CNM talking about her and not TO her during pushing?? what was the rest of her experience like with this CNM??
i really hope she had a better experience then what this statement suggests. .

I know I had that problem with one of my births because the nurse refused to let me go to the bathroom. I pooped too. One other nurse had slapped my leg saying I was shaking it in the sterile plane. Well, then when they had me push for over an hour and 1/2 I peed and pooed everywhere. I felt bad while it was happening, but was later glad. I asked my husband if they had to keep changing the chux they placed and he said yes. I did a little celebration inside. If I had been allowed to go to the bathroom, that would not have been so messy. Oops, sorry ladies! Next time let mom go to the bathroom and ambulate at will. Don’t encourage pushing until she feels like it.
I am sorry OP your CNM wasn’t nicer to you and respectful.

Oh my goodness someone is in the WRONG PROFESSION. If you can’t handle bodily fluids, don’t go into the childbirth field. I always find myself reassuring clients that if there’s other stuff coming out of that end, she’s probably pushing the right way.

I totally agree Kali. I recently had a wonderful (extremely shy) mum who was so nervous about releasing her bladder/bowels during pushing that she was fighting against her contractions and was unable to relax. After I explained that it is normal and that if it does happen it shows me she is pushing in the right area she relaxed and her beautiful wee babe was born within the hour.
OP, I am sorry you were made to feel like this was something unusual/strange/something to be embarrassed about. What an unprofessional comment for a CNM to make.

This is mine. It’s not the same as the last. This happened with the birth of my daughter, 5 years ago. I was semi-laying, on my back, pushing. My epidural was wearing off, and I was really struggling. The CNM said this. The nurse that was there piped up, “Oh good! that means that she’s using the right muscles. Good job, Emilee!” The midwife hadn’t been there at all through my labor, and she kept leaving as I was pushing. She walked in, watched me push once and made this comment to the nurse. The nurse said what she did and the midwife turned and left, muttering, “should have cath’d her.” The nurse and I had previously decided not to cath, but rather just to tap my bladder every once in a while during dialation, and allow for natural relieving during pushing. She said that this way there would be less chance of bladder infection postpartum. Further on during pushing, the midwife came in and out, and at 2 hours 45 mins of pushing said, “Ok, get the section room ready, she can’t do it.” The nurse said, “Yes she can, You are doing it!!” The midwife said, “Okay, but at 3 hours, we are calling it.” The nurse replied, “She’ll have her baby by then.” The nurse really saved the day that day. She was so helpful and encouraging. The midwife, on the other hand, not so much. During the last few mins of pushing, she put her hands in alongside the baby’s head, trying to pull the baby out. The nurse said, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” The midwife said, “helping a little bit.” Nurse: “well, stop.”
the CNM really was as awful as it sounds.

Wow, how can any nurse be that ignorant let alone one who’s certified as a midwife? How old was she – twelve?
I’m glad you had a good nurse there to help you and stand up for you. Too bad you both had to deal with a moron.

I’m so sorry you had to go through that! Holy mackerel, that CNM was in the wrong profession. She should have been a drill sergeant.

THANK GOD for your nurse. I am so sorry you had a midwife like that. What a disgrace to her profession.

what a lovely nurse! I know that the nurse at my son’s birth was an angel in scrubs. Those positive comments are so very helpful.
Shotty midwife though.

Glad I’m not the only one. With my last baby, the OB asked me to go ahead and push if I was ready. I did and peed right in his face (poor guy). He told me not to pay attention to it, that I was doing great and it meant that I was doing it right. Got him out in less then 5 minutes.

My midwife at my 2nd birth was soo good about it, i was young and shy, and had been up to the bathroom about a million times, but when it came time to push, i was soo scared that i would pee all over, she just looked at me and told me, “i’ll give you ten bucks if you can pee far enough to hit me!” made me laugh, relax and push my beautiful daughter out with no problems!

Bad midwife! Bad! *smacks nose with newspaper*
Sorry, that’s the most coherent response I can make after all the brain cells I’ve lost from reading the recent entries.
