Thoughtful Thursday! “You Have Nothing To Worry About…She Knows What She Is Doing.”
“You have nothing to worry about…she knows what she’s doing.” -OB to dubious father after mother announced she was now planning to birth at home with midwives.
My midwives reached that point with me. “You know what you’re doing.” It was after two births though and they knew I knew my stuff and birthed well. It’s nice to have that kind of relationship with a care provider, where they respect your decisions and on the occasions where you feel something is wrong, they LISTEN because they know your general “freak out” threshold.

My GP/OB told me something similar when I informed her I was PG and planning to birth at home with a midwife. She said “Well, you are a perfect candidate for it! I wish you the best of luck. Unless you break your arm or come down with a throat infection I won’t be seeing you until after your little one is born. See you in 9 months!” I was kind of expecting a fight and was pleasantly surprised that she was as supportive as she was!
With #5 due in 10 weeks, it’s not even a discussion anymore. She finds out I am PG at my physical and wishes me luck!! LOL

Wow that is amazing. We have seen a couple of GPs who probably knew the mother for years and were able to support home birth. I don’t think we have even seen a GP support the mother over the father’s objections. But an OB?!? That is pretty impressive. Was this OB the backup for the midwives? It would be so nice if every OB felt confident that midwives could handle the normal healthy ones and the OB would take the high risk and the transfers.

It’s Bizarro OB from a parallel universe where OB s are sensible and trust birth, like Holland. *cue Twilight Zone music*

Nah, its more positive music than that. Think “These are a few of my favorite things…” From the Sound of Music.

OBs who always support the new mother,
Midwives who love your new sister or brother,
Doulas with lightbulbs that twinkle on strings…
These are a few of my favorite things!
Mothers who go deep inside for contractions,
Fathers who shield her from scolding reactions,
Nurses who treat the new babies like kings–
These are a few of my favorite things!

This is me!
I lucked out with this OB and my whole birth experience. I went to my regular Dr where they confirmed my pregnancy, they then asked if I had an OB in mind or if I would like them to refer me to “their” OB. Being from the UK your health system is so weird to me! I had no clue so just asked them to refer me.
At this point I had no idea about birth or pregnancy. Started watching youtube videos and came across a hypnobirthing thing. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen and wanted THAT for my birth. I took the hospital tour and started to realise that I probably wasn’t gonna have the experience I wanted in that setting.
Fast forward about 20 books and movies later and I had decided I wanted a home birth. My hypnobirthing instructor recommended my midwives…who were wonderful.
So, my first OB appointment my husband basically says “well tell her then…tell her what you plan on doing.”
I did. And she was cool with it. This random OB was apparantly one of the most pro-home-birth in the area and I later heard stories of how good she was with the hospital birthers too. Letting Moms labor, no ticking clock, no pushed births. She could basically see in me that I had this down and even i she wanted to (which she didn’t) she wouldn’t change my mind.
Knowing what I know now I would just use midwives or my second birth, but if I needed a Dr. she would be on my list.
BTW. Birthed at home 8 days before due date, 6 hour labor, beautiful baby girl.
The End

Wow! What an awesome OB! Not *ALL* OB’s play the death card when it comes to homebirth and midwives! My OB with my daughter was actually really pro-midwifery and homebirth, but I was too scared with it being my first. I wish I would have, though. I had an awesome homebirth with my son, though!

That’s unusual.. usually they’re trying to play the death card to spouses!
Hope your birth went to plan, OP.
