Thoughtful Thursday! “…Sometimes Women Don’t Make It Out Of The Tub In Time…”
“We don’t do water births here. However, sometimes women don’t *make it out of the tub in time*. But, no, we don’t do water births here.” – OB to mother discussing mother’s desire to birth in water, while nodding and winking at the mother.
My midwives said this to me, exactly the same way, with the same knowing smile.
There were two tubs, one being a birth tub and the other being a labor tub/jacuzzi. You “weren’t allowed” to birth in the jacuzzi, but sometimes the birth happened “so quickly” that the mother “wasn’t able” to get out of the tub in time.
(I got to labor in the jacuzzi and birth in the birth tub. Apparently the problem was that the jacuzzi was tougher to clean afterward.)

Reminds me of when I was preparing for my VBAC. It was at a hospital-attached birthing center with midwives, and I knew they did water births there. My midwife told me “Well, we’re not *supposed* to do VBACs in the tub, but we break all our rules sooner or later!” *wink*
I ended up getting out of the tub by my own choice when it was time to push, but it was nice to know I wouldn’t have had to fight about it.

I like this doctor. I love when they “follow the rules” just to keep the crazy docs happy, and do things properly, the way they’re meant to be, “by mistake”.
Oops, another mom that I forgot to order pit/IV/epidural/fetal monitoring/etc.
OP, thanks for sharing!

My MW said this to me as well
“According to the people in charge you’re not allowed to birth in the tub, but if they think I’m going to try and tell a transitioning woman to get out of a hot bath and onto a cold bed, they’ve got another thing coming”
He explained that it was due to recent policy stating that women weren’t allowed to birth in the tub unless the midwives had access from all sides, the birth unit was only remodeled a few years ago with the tubs in the corners so it wasn’t likely to be fixed any soon. They had inflatable tubs but apparently they got cold too quickly so most women didn’t like them.
