“I’m Going To Let You Stay Pregnant…”
“I’m going to let you stay pregnant, but you’ll have to follow up with your doctor next week.” – OB to 35 week pregnant mother with slightly elevated blood pressure and labs that were all normal.
WOW. LET her huh?? I suppose normal lab work isn’t good enough; you still have to rub in the fact that YOU’RE the doctor, the source of all knowledge and authority. God forbid that woman make her own medical choices. Ugh.
Yeah agreed Cmat, I call white coat syndrome about the BP. Happens to me all the time because of my previous birth trauma…

I’m sure she thanks you for LETTING her keep that 35-week fetus inside while she deals with her blood pressure.

And, doctor, I’m going to ‘let you’ go and find someone else who will treat me as a real person. ‘kbye.”

Dear Doctor,
It’s called “autonomy.” Look it up.

Let?!?!?
My father used to say, “Who died and left HIM boss?!”
Sheesh.
Thanks, doc.
I wish I could say I would have cut and run, but I probably would have fawned and thanked and bowed my way out.
Hindsight is always 20-20, though.
OP, I hope you escaped this cretin, but if not, I hope you got the healthy, safe birth you and your baby wanted and deserved.

Wait a minute, “follow up with YOUR doctor next week.” Why was this woman in the ER being seen by whomever was available. I had an emergency trip to the ER while out of town visiting my in-laws at about 35 weeks. (Baby shower) Had blurred vision and slightly elevated blood pressure. They decided it was no big deal. They probably said something like this minus the “let you.” Actually, they probably said “When is your next appt. with your regular doc?” “Well, looks like no big deal, but be sure to let him know.” Gee those are different. Kinda puts me in charge of my medical care. Huh, amazing! Tone means everything! (of course I’m reading in the tone here too)

But everyone reacts differently to tone too.
When I presented with HBP and all the classic signs of preeclampsia at 36 wks, my doc told me basically this exact phrase. And I didn’t think anything of it. I’m not one to nitpick, and since I have a good relationship with my doc, I knew he didn’t actually mean what it sounded like.
However, the next week’s appt he scheduled an induction for me. And I delivered vaginally, and it was an amazing experience.

How generous, for this doctor to “let” her not be subjected to induction or cesarean section for no clear medical indication.
