Thoughtful Thursday! “…I Am Sure You Can Do It.”
“I’m very concerned about your baby, and I’m prepping for a cesarean, the anesthesiologist is on his way up, but I respect your desire for a natural, vaginal birth, and while we’re waiting, I’m going to help you make this happen, listen well and I’m sure you can do it.” -OB to a mother who went on to have a vaginal delivery.
That’s very thoughtful. One of my fears when planning a homebirth was that if I did need to be transferred, the staff would look down on me and chastise me for wanting to be “reckless” and have a baby at home. It was quite the opposite, they were very sensitive.

That’s wonderful. It’s so encouraging to hear stories like this…that even if things get a little rocky, there are OBs that will work with you and help you have the safe, natural, healthy birth that’s better for everybody…and keep the medical stuff waiting in the wings, just in case, but not shoved down your throat.
I think this is what hospital births should be all about. Docs not only medically competent (wise move to prep for surgery that might become necessary) but also good at helping women give birth, and energetic about and invested in avoiding medical interventions.

This is mine! I’m so happy that the DR worked with me…..although it meant for her to manually stretch my cervix from 5cm to 10cm..ouch! Baby girl #4 was born 8 minutes later, perfectly healthy and I reached down and pulled straight up to me, she didn’t leave my arms for 2 hours until I left the hospital. When I thanked the DR later, she said for me to not thank her, I did it all myself:) Even my midwife was amazed, she said she had never seen anything like it!

An OB who treats a woman like an adult. That’s all we want. Speak the truth, don’t scare on purpose but if it’s serious let us know. If there is time to make it happen, then make it happen if mom consents. This could have easily been a bad “my OB said what” if she blurted, “we have to get your baby out now or I’m going to cut you” rather than explaining things like the mom is an adult who deserves respect and the ability to make her own decisions.

I think I love this OB. My OB is fairly supportive, but he fractured his heel about 6 weeks ago and may not be back in the delivery rotation when my little girl comes. It makes me smile to know that there are some REALLY awesome doctors out there!
