“Stop Checking Your Cervix So Much.”
“Stop checking your cervix so much.” – OB to a woman using fertility awareness method for birth control after the woman went in for an appointment after having found a hard lump on the side of her cervix.
Translation- I don’t want you knowing anything about your body so that you will blindly follow me!
I mean seriously, I think it’s funny that there is soooo much awareness about self breast exams, but heaven forbid we try to be proactive about any other part of our body!

‘scuse me, but the last time I checked, it was *my* cervix! I will check it as often as I want, thank you very much! (Maybe this OB was intimidated by the fact that this woman KNEW where her cervix was…can’t let the inmates start running the asylum, after all!) ::sigh::

the lump was determined to be part of the wall, so all normal part. I did get a second opinion when I switched to a midwife that was supportive of fertility awareness.
And I strongly recommend fertility awareness method! it is fabulous what your body tells you.

Glad it wasn’t anything to be concerned about!
I’m all for fertility awareness. When you know about your body, you are more likely to know when something might be wrong. Some people aren’t comfy checking their cervix and that’s okay.. but there’s nothing wrong with checking either!

I asked my Dr. to check out a lump on my cervix while he was down there during a papsmear- he did and it was a harmless cyst. He had no problem with me checking my own. I can’t understand why anyone would? I totally agree with you- its so liberating, easy, and informative!

Glad it wasn’t anything bad! I love knowing what my body is doing. I actually heard of a woman using Billings (that’s what I use and teach) who caught that she had cervical cancer early simply because she noticed an abnormal change in her cervical mucus. It’s amazing what we can learn from just being in tune with our bodies!

NFP is awesome, but you do need to find a provider who is educated about it (as your experience clearly demonstrates).

… really? From an OB? Haven’t met one I didn’t have to keep away from my cervix. I’m curious–was the lump anything?
