“If This Baby Was Asian…”
“If this baby was Asian, his name would be *Well Hung*. -Family Practice doctor during a newborn exam of a male baby.
Wow, Doc, you think you’re so funny, sexualizing a newborn AND bringing racism into your little joke! I can’t WAIT to hear how you joke when the baby boy is Asian!
*shudders* Creep.

OK, maybe I belong in 3rd grade, because I laughed.

Me also, but it reminded me of a restaurant near us called “Hung Far Low” Its been in business for decades. It does very well.
I would be horrified if somebody said that about my newborn though.

Yea, I must hang around my kids too much.. I got a good laugh out of this one. I think I missed the whole racist & perv thing… I’m filipino and find asian jokes hilarious.. my hispanic friends find mexican jokes hilarious.. i guess it’s just my culture. I really don’t get offended easy.

uhhh? Okay, good for me, what? Good for your husband, he would’ve gotten himself in jail leaving you and your kids SOL, either that or a fatty lawsuit lasting at least a couple years and at least $20k for attorney/court expenses. (assuming you were to sue Dr. Racist for his comment, which thus provoked your husband to lash out in anger)

Yes, clearly I meant that literally.
How about “my husband and I would have wanted to punch him in the face, which is to say that the existence of a person of Asian descent who isn’t personally offended by such a comment doesn’t make the comment inoffensive.”
Better?

I’ll admit it, my initial reaction was a giggle/groan, but while it might be funny to some people in a certain context, it’s certainly not appropriate where there is not such a relationship established. Since it wound up on here, it was clearly deemed offensive.
(That said, my DH has pulled the “bigger, longer, and uncut” remark about our son. He’s quite happy with keeping any boys we have intact, and I didn’t even have to convince him! Still, he’s my *husband.* The baby’s *father.* Totally different than if some other care provider says it.)

Dear Care Provider,
Commenting on someone’s genitals is considered inappropriate in all situations EXCEPT those that are related to a medical diagnosis. “Your penis is abnormally sized and/or shaped, and here’s your options for treatment” is alright. “Wow, your junk is big!” is not. Please file this information in every chart, and keep it professional, savvy?
sincerely,
your patients

That joke would have been terribly funny forty years ago when the doctor was in third grade. *sigh*
