Thoughtful Thursday! “…This Is What Labor & Birth Are Supposed to Be Like!”
“Nurses, watch and learn! This is what labor and birth are supposed to be like!” -OB to nurses observing a non-medicated birth.
This one is mine. My doctor was a resident and this was my third birth. My two previous births had been natural hospital births but I had never had such a supportive doctor. I was 9cm dilated and walking around the L&D halls with my husband and doula, stopping and leaning against the wall for contractions while my husband and doula used natural pain relief techniques like massage and soothing voices.
A couple weeks after my baby was born, the doctor mailed a card to my house, thanking me for allowing her to be a part of my birth! She also announced that she recently got a positive pregnancy test and would use my birth as her inspiration. It was an absolute honor for me to read that.

Amanda, your story literally brought tears to my eyes. I am sooooooo happy for you that you were able to have such a supportive doctor and experience
) How sweet that she sent you a card and is using you as her inspiration!

What an AMAZING experience. I had one suppoertive doctor for one of my hospital births, but the nursing staff more than made up for it- they were unbelievably unsupportive- to the point of refusing to call the doctor to let her know I was even there until I was almost ready to deliver. One nurse even caused me a permanent nerve injury by pinning my arm down with her knee and shoving an IV into the back of my wrist, even after I told her it was fine with my doctor for me NOT to have an IV.And that was my GOOD hospital birth.

This is SO awesome. The world needs more docs like this. On one hand, I would fully understand if this doc put her medical career on hold to spend time with her new baby, long hours and being on call aren’t conducive to establishing breastfeeding, etc.
But yet I also hope she decides to continue attending births in some capacity, when her season of life permits!
This also reminds me of hearing about my sister’s SIL. She was birthing her first in the hospital with a super-supportive OB, and the nurses were trying to push some interventions, I think it may have been an IV? The OB told the nurses “Leave her alone, she doesn’t need that she’s doing great!” She went on to birth her next child at home.

Yay, doc!!! That is so awesome
Later the night that my son was born, I remember one of the nurses (who wasn’t present for my labor/delivery) commenting while doing the shift-change checkup that I must not have had an epidural. I confirmed that, and she said “I knew it, his color is great and he’s so alert…we aren’t supposed to tell the moms, but you can tell the difference in a baby born naturally, and one whose mother was drugged.”

Very cool, especially from an OB to nurses. Now we just need this OB to tell that to other OB’s.
