Thoughtful Thursday! “…We’ll Hypnobaby it up together…”
“I know this isn’t want you wanted….but I will be RIGHT here the entire time. We’re going to get you in the tub, run a pit line, your husband can nap, and we’ll Hypnobaby it up together while he rests. It will be okay, we won’t crank it, and you’ll be done birthing this stubborn little girl in no time!” -OB to mother who had been at 6 cm the entire night and was exhausted after 3 weeks of contractions.
I’ll be here the whole time, we won’t crank it up…
Wow. Here’s an example of a necessary intervention, discussed right(gently), used right(slowly, only as needed), and it looks like it didn’t scar mom’s heart.
That’s a math equation and all three components have to be there,
Am I allowed to be a teensy bit jealous?

Yeap me too. Jealous as hell. After 60 hours, 17 “stuck” at 6 cms, my doctor said we could give you drugs and I’ll allow you another 4 hours to try to dilate but you haven’t been able to get past 6 cms yet so I doubt you will be able to at all & even then I doubt you will have enough energy to push. I think we should talk about c/s.
And the rest is history

Comments like this give me hope for the Obstetrics profession in America.
Yay for good doctors, good people.

If I had 3 weeks of contractions, Pitocin would indeed start looking like my best friend.

No kidding. It is good imo that they’re doing a low dose and sounds like they kept it low. The whole “up the dose every 15 minutes” thing is just torture.

You know what I think makes this entry really awesome? It’s that the doc is free of the God complex but takes such pleasure in his/her job. It isn’t even that s/he’s in favor of a low-intervention birth so much as that s/he’s so happy to get the parents off to the best possible start with their baby.

And I thought a 3 DAY labor was long! gotta give it to the mama with the 3 WEEK labor! And on top of that, having an excellent OB!

This is so great! I have attended births like this as a hypno-doula. The OBs in our area are very familiar with Hypnobabies and love moms who use it.
Here is a link to the longest birth I ever attended and you can see how the 4 OBs this mom had to work with all were so respectful of her.

I wonder if this mom had one of the OBs I know.

LOVE this. It really shows the power of words. Very important in creating positive expectations and outcomes… just phrasing it in the way can make a HUGE difference in the mothers attitude and expectation of an intervention. Bravo, Dr. Nice!

I vaguely recall from my waterbirth that they did something to make it safe to run an IV line while I remained in the tub, but I honestly can’t tell you what. I think they were willing to tape something over the heplock to keep it dry, and if I needed an IV, they would have me keep my arm out of the tub. But this is all so hazy.

I did. My first birth was a pit induction for leaking amnitoic fluid at 1:00 pm after being up all night the night before with prodromal labor. I had a CNM. I was able to get in the tub with the IV i and the monitors on, since they had a telemetry monitor at that hospital.

Hi All!
This is my entry! I was SO EXCITED to find out it got to be shared!
My OB is amazing…seriously, and utterly amazing. He’s why you should NEVER judge a book by it’s covers -a 56 year old white guy who wears a bow tie. I remember thinking, “Oh man…he’s not going to be any different from my last OB.” I was so, so very wrong. He was just incredible – not only is he a devout Catholic, and a member of our Church, he’s just a really great guy, and an awesome member of our community.
*HE* was the one who suggested Hypnobabies – I had “tried” Bradley last time, but it “didn’t work” (meaning, I read the books, but really didn’t process them or take them seriously) with my first child. While his birth was not awful, I realized afterward my husband and I could have been a LOT more educated and informed – heck, I’m a librarian. We research everything else, why not one of the most important things to ever happen to me?
Long story short, my daughter Grace’s birth was AMAZING…simply amazing. My nurses were competent, supportive women who respected my wishes. My doctor supported them and talked me down off the ledge a few times (seriously, 3 weeks of prodromal labor? Blech! And I had a 2.5 year old to chase, plus other obligations I didn’t want to give up yet….). What made me feel even more special was that my OB stayed with me on his DAY OFF….10 days before Christmas, after he had worked two weeks, straight, with no break.
Grace’s birth was incredible, like I said…she came down really fast once those contractions started back up, and I remember hearing my husband just say, “Oh wow…honey, it’s going so well!!” and I remember saying, “I have to push, no counting!”…the nurses and my doctor just laughed at me. Doc just said, “There’s no reason to count, you know what you’re doing.” That attitude is what drew me to him – while he definitely believes in obstetric medicine when necessary, he also feels that he’s just an assistant in the birthing process, not the participant.
Dr. Mike – you’re amazing. Thank you for the awesome gifts of support, and prayer, during my pregnancy and delivery. Thank you, thank you, thank you. When I called the Nurse Manager to thank her for such a wonderful staff recently, I was told that the nurses still talk about my birthing experience and how “fun” it was – I just remember them saying, “It’s like it used to be! It’s like when we first became nurses! Awesome job!” Seriously, they made me want to have 10 babies, I can’t say enough about the staff at my hospital!
And yes, I vaguely remember them taping the iv somehow…I was kind of tired by that point since I hadn’t slept, so it’s a bit fuzzy.

Amazing! And from an OB? I’m shocked! I wonder if this OB would mind giving lessons to the rest on this site. Lol
