Thoughtful Thursday! “…I’m Just Going To Help.”
“No, you are. I’m just going to help.” -Midwife to mom after the mother asked if that midwife was going to deliver her baby.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!! I always tell people: mommas deliver babies; midwives catch babies. That is, unless Momma catches her own babe!!!

This was mine. It was a planned home birth turned hospital because of PROM at 35 weeks. There are two midwives in the practice, and I love both.
It was 6 AM when I walked into the hospital, and I was scared because I’d wanted to be at home. She said this to me, and continued to give me the best care. She almost never left my side for the whole 17 hour labor, slept at my side when tired, ran interference with the nurses, reminded me that I wanted to catch the baby, even though it was 3AM and the NICU docs and nurses were hovering, and generally gave me a ‘home birth in the hospital’.
The NICU stay was a whole ‘nother story…

Doctors delivery babies…Mamas birth them, midwives catch them (unless Mama catches too).

Babies aren’t delivered. They are born. Their mothers birth them. Doctors and midwives catch them as their mother births them. Pizzas are delivered.

nah, doctors deliver them more times then not. Unless the Mama is blessed with a great doctor (or midwife) who allows her to birth the baby.
Doctors rarely will just catch a baby, they are far too impatient to sit and do nothing, they must be involved hands on and in control.

The use of the word deliver in reference to babies is something that needs to be changed. Babies are not delivered. They are born.
Women always give birth to their babies. The degree of intervening as baby is emerging is something to be challenged, but women always give birth, even if surgically. It’s a sad world that we can’t recognize that mothers do the work and think that doctors and midwives deliver babies. They certainly don’t grow them for us.

preaching to the converted. It was mostly said as tongue in cheek… because doctors use the word all the time, particularly in reference to the way they came in and saved the day by “delivering” the baby. To me delivery implies the need to be saved from something (in these types of circumstances anyways), which doctors like to do on a routine, regular basis. Hence the reason I said “doctors deliver babies”.

That’s kind of what mine said to me. She said, YOU deliver the baby, I just catch her.
I LOVE my midwife!!!!

The midwife on call when I checked into the hospital said pretty much the same thing to me: “I’ll be the one catching your baby!” I love that. It’s a very hands-off approach.
