Thoughtful Thursday! “…Your Body Will Do This On It’s Own, Just Breathe Your Baby Down.”
“Stop holding your breath, honey, your baby needs you to breathe, your body will do this on it’s own, just breathe your baby down.” -OB to a mother who had always been told to do “purple pushing” during her prior births.
I have a question, is this true for epidural births too? Is there any indication for purple pushing in moms birthing with an epidural where mom and baby are both doing fine?

I have had moms with an epidural do spontanious pushing. Most OB’s will encourage purple pushing, but it can be done the less dramatic way with no trouble.

Many of the nurses I’ve worked with have just let epidural moms breathe the baby down until it is visible, then a few pushes and baby is out. And no stress on mom or baby.

With my last child, I had an epidural and really didn’t push much at all. We just sort of let her come. She sort of popped out like a cork and my midwife had to catch her literally! LOL! Your body will push the baby out when it is ready, so I don’t think the epidural would make much of a difference.

Somebody’s either got a natural abundance of common sense, or has been taking notes from midwives. Either way, awesome.

I LOVED this doctor! This was my 4th baby, and this OB was not my regular OB, he was in a cesarean at another hospital, so she came in to deliver, and I was so glad afterwards that she did! This was completely different from any birth I had ever had, I was always told to push, and so I just did it expecting it to be what they wanted me to do, and she told me this. It was so wonderful. She was definitely a midwife in disguise! I refer a lot of clients to her now.(I’m a doula now, in part from this birth that inspired me of a better way!)And no one had been disapointed with her yet! I love working with this OB!

Yeaaahhh Doc! I am a certified nurse midwife and I have to say my BIGGEST pet peeve is valsalva pushing (purple pushing) coupled with the frantic verbal coaching and counting. It is way toooo frenetic and freaks women out when they hear people shouting to push their baby out, they can’t help but think something is drastically wrong! I wish more OB providers (MD’s, midwives and nurses were more aware of the evidence surrounding this harmful practice and if they ARE aware of it, shame on them for not practicing evidence based medicine. NO PURPLE PUSHING or CRAZY ASS SHOUTING AT THE END OF BIRTH!!
Thanks for sharing this awesome doc and situation, I was beginning to get really depressed at all of the insanity posted recently!!

Can you share this doctor’s name, since she’s so awesome? Also, tell her you recommend ladies to her, and why. OBs are under so much pressure, it seems, to conform, that your encouragement will quite possibly be the thing that helps her hang on.

Give this doc lots of referrals. Did she read the HypnoBirthing book? As a HypnoBirthing practitioner, we teach women to breathe their baby down. Many times doctors and midwives are not pleased and want women to hold their breath and push! Keep up the good work!
