“…I Have A Hair Appointment At 6 & I’m Not Coming Back To Do A Cesarean…”
“O.K., it’s 4:00, I have a hair appointment at six and I’m not coming back to do a Cesarean section at midnight…so let’s do this thing.” -OB to a mother during a long induction that was not progressing.
Great! I was beginning to think I’d have to deal with you the whole time! Don’t let the door hit you where the good Lord split you!
Just out of curiosity, what was the reason for induction? Because this is just a guess.. but if the induction isn’t working then baby’s probably not going to make a debut for you today and probably shouldn’t. K, Doc?

A HAIR APPOINTMENT?!? Let me guess, the obstetrician is Medically Blonde and, like me, dyes her hair red or some other dark colour in an attempt at achieving artificial intelligence.
You have got to be kidding me. Next time, maybe Dr. Bimbo should check the mother’s Bishop score before scheduling the appointment at the hair salon. Or, better yet, not induce in the first place.
A hair appointment. Ye gods and little fishes.

And my family wonders why I chose a homebirth for baby #2…

Homebirth freaks my family out too.. except my husband surprisingly. Its our plan when baby #2 comes around.

My husband was reluctant at first, but when I told him about what happened with my first birth (6 years ago — before we met) and then had him do a bit of reading and documentary watching (“Pregnant in America” and “Business of Being Born”) he was more on board. And since meeting our midwife and realizing she isn’t incompetent, he’s completely relaxed about it
) Baby is due in September and we’re very excited to be more in control of our experience! And of course — to not have to deal with idiots like this doctor.

Why would an OB schedule a hair appointment AND an induction on the SAME DAY!?

Because to the OB, it’s no big deal if she performs surgery. That’s her job.
BTW, that hair appointment probably indicates more than just a hair cut. I would bet she also had something she was going to AFTER the hair appointment. That’s why she categorizes her next available time as *midnight.* Because she’s getting her hair done, going out somewhere, and planning on getting back at about midnight, at which point she’d feel obligated to call the labor nurses to check on her patient.
Makes sense, right?

Meant to add, if she’s having her hair done for a specific event, she probably doesn’t want to get paged out of that event to come deliver a baby in her evening gown.

LOL Like my mom’s OB, who showed up to my birth near midnight and in a tux.
Back in the “good old days”…*sigh*

This is one reason why “sometimes” going with a group can be better. Then they don’t feel the pressure to hang around, the on call OB can deliver.

wow. i mean… just… wow. has it really come to this? are the docs so bold that they won’t even ATTEMPT to cover it with an excuse that sounds a little more “professional?” REALLY? a hair appointment? the audacity. the sheer audacity. a situation like that totally warrants getting the medical supervisor in the hospital (normally on call) in that room ASAP, the doctor and nurses present, and that comment needs to be documented… because THAT. IS. NOT. ACCEPTABLE. BY. ANY. STRETCH. OF. THE. IMAGINATION. it infuriates me that that doc is so arrogant that they think a comment like that is above reprimand. to the original poster – oh, honey, i am so sorry. i hope that you were not pressured into anything by this callous, totally ignorant individual and if you were, that your next birth be something out of your dreams.

This is mine
This was said in an attempt to be light and breezy I believe. However, after a nightmarish and traumatizing 40 hour induction, it amazes me that she had zero sensitivity! It started Thursday night with Cervadil, even though she wanted to use Cytotec. I ADAMANTLY refused Cytotec, but woke up Friday morning with her slipping it in anyway. I can’t even get into every detail that happened, but nothing about it was pleasant or successful. By Saturday afternoon around 4pm, she said this about her hair and wanting to get it over with so she could leave. There were so many other upsetting things said to me, and about me, in the OR and afterward that I can’t include them all here! The reason for the induction, was the previous submission…it was my original OB who freaked out about the baby being small and told us it would be brain damaged or stillbirth. She wanted to get him out so that she could cover her ass. She was worried something would go wrong and she would then have to explain to a panel that I refused an induction. Sadly, I was very well-informed and was looking to have the fewest interventions possible, but being scared like that threw us into a panic. 2 1/2 years later I’m still suffering the effects of PTSD and am afraid to get preganant again. I just don’t know if I have enough fight in me to seek out a VBAC, which is hard to come by in Los Angeles.

“Please write exactly that into my chart, okay? That the medical indication for my abdominal surgery was ‘hair appointment’ and that you didn’t feel like coming back later on.”
How about just….stopping the induction? You know, letting the mom go home? Letting the baby grow a little longer and then come back when she’s naturally in labor…? That would save the doctor from coming back at midnight too.

Because she probably broke the poor woman’s water at 2 cm. All so she can keep the hairdresser from having to wait. Hmm….I’m sure if that mom had called the sOB’s hairdresser and said “Dr. Asshat won’t be here tonight because I’m having my baby,” the hairdresser would have said, “Oh honey, you go ahead and take your time!”

Yep.. “take your time and congratulations!”
As though the hair dresser really cares one way or the other as long as they get notice. She probably knows Dr. Idiot is a doctor and is aware that at times she will have to cancel.
