Thoughtful Thursday! “The Reason For The Cesarean Had Nothing To Do With You!”
“The reason for the cesarean had nothing to do with you!” -OB to a mother who had a cesarean for significant fetal decelarations while pushing, where the baby needed the NICU for several days after birth. The OB told the mother she would be an excellent candidate for a VBAC in the future.
WOW! Sounds a lot like the OB that had to be called in to assist with my delivery and what ended up in a crash c-section!!! There are a few out there like this… not very many (and note we have never used this OB again and are now waiting on our first home birth just any day) but it happens sometimes

He reminds me of the resident du jour who gave me my C-section when my first child got stuck. Very supportive, encouraged me to go for a VBAC – and to eat prior to going to the hospital next time and pack food, if hunger was what caused me to have the migraine that exhausted me so badly.
Let’s hear it for the supportive OBs. We need more of them.

This was me. I went into labor as Labor Day was ending and my OB wasn’t supposed to be on until 8am. We stayed at home for a long time; I was moving very slowly. We got to the hospital around 4am or so. The hospital has the policy of the belt monitor for 1st half hour. Things looked good and we went to intermittent monitoring. I don’t remember all the details, of when things changes, but we went from intermittent back to the belt. The readings were not always coming up, and the next step was the dreaded internal monitoring. The nurses stated to just do it, but I freaked and said I didn’t want it. That made them stop and actually explain why it was necessary. I remember pushing on my hands and knees. They were very supportive of my desire for no pain meds; it was never brought up. The fetal heart tones were not doing well when pushing, so we tried not pushing. he still was showing problems. O2 was tried and was not enough of a help.
They must have been in touch with my ob because she showed up around 7:30. I don’t remember what time it was decided that a c-section would happen, but my son was delivered at 8:24 am. He went straight to the special care nursery and was on oxygen until the middle of the night. I was able to hold him for the 1st time about 10 hours after his birth. He had some breathing issues at 1st and we struggled with nursing. But we had support and we made it through. He was discharged from the hospital after 10 days and is now a healthy and energetic almost 3 year old.
I don’t remember exactly when my OB said this comment, but I was still in the hospital. She was very supportive and just let me cry when I left the discharge class. I had to take the class even though I wasn’t leaving with my baby. We are currently trying for number 2 and will go back to this OB.

Gotta love encouragement. In my experience, a kind OB is like a rare gemstone.
