Thoughtful Thursday! “I Know This Is A Long Way From Home And I Am Sorry…”
“I know this is a long way from home, and I’m sorry. Hopefully you can
go home tomorrow, and your midwife will take good care of you.” -OB to
patient right before beginning cesarean surgery, after non emergency
home birth transfer.
This was mine! I was devastated to have to lose my home birth, but the care I received was so human, so compassionate, that it really made me feel at ease. My midwife came with me to the hospital, and stayed throughout the consult with the doctor, even stayed with me in my hospital room for 8 hours after my surgery. The OB told me that his own children were delivered by midwives, and that he knew that midwives provide better care than doctors most of the time. He recognized my need for surgical intervention and also the tremendous loss I was experiencing as a result, and because he knew how badly I wanted to be home with my baby, he came to the hospital the next afternoon and had the nurses discharge me (when they really did not want to). My midwife provided all of my follow-up care at home visits, the way it should be.

That’s great that you’ve found a decent OB should you ever need an OB’s care again

I also had a very good c-section experience after 3 days of labor at home. My doctor even allowed my doula to come into the OR to support me while they gave me the spinal injections. It made a world of difference, and I was very grateful to the hospital staff, my doctor, my anesthesiologist and my doula for a wonderful birth experience.

I am planning a home birth now for my second child and I have to say, if I ended up for any reason with a delivery that required such intervention… I would be moved to tears by this kind of sympathy from a doctor.
I think if more women received this kind of sympathetic treatment during surgical deliveiries there would be far fewer women who suffer from “birth rape,” post partum depression, and PTSD after C-section delivery.

Why were these words disliked? It sounds as if the OB was trying to comfort the mother by telling her that he was sorry she had to make the transfer and that he hoped the midwife would be able to help her out once she got home. At least he didn’t rub in her face “Well, this could have been avoided if you came here in the first place”.

I think “dislike” is the default setting for the blog, since it’s usually a “wtf” situation. there’s probably no way to turn it to “like” for thoughtful thursday, so we have to pretend.
