“It’s Useless To Talk To You…”
“I’m sorry, the Gynecologist won’t see you today after all. She says its useless to talk to you until you had an HSG dye test done to see if your tubes are clear. Only then can she decide what protocol to use for you.” – Physician’s Assistant to a woman who has been trying to conceive for 3+ years and had been waiting 2 months for an appointment with the Gynecologist.
I readily admit that I’m ignorant about this, but wouldn’t she need to see the gyno to get orders for the test? Am I wrong?

Apparently in this nurse-practitioner’s world, women can just pop over to WalMart and pick up an HSG dye test, and this patient should have known to do this before having the gall to book an appointment. :-b

I thought, since dye was involved, the test was performed by the service tech who got called for the Xerox copier when it malfunctioned. But now that you put it this way, Wal-Mart makes a lot more sense.

And I bet they made her sit in the @(%^&*^&# waiting room for over an hour to tell her that.
Typical.

That was my first thought too.. how long did she have to wait, just to be snubbed? B/s! If she needed tests in advance then it was the OB’s job to order said tests. Things like that can be discussed over the phone.. say it with me “We need these tests to be done and for results to be in before the appointment, what is the earliest you could make an appointment for them?” Now that wasn’t so hard, it uses some tact too instead of making someone feel like crap when they’re already down and frustrated.
OP- if you haven’t already concieved, I sure hope you ran screaming from this doctor and found one that will help you.

Oh man! Poor woman. I would’ve had a breakdown right there in the office. It pisses me off that they didn’t tell her what she needed to do/bring when she booked her appointment. UGH!

as someone who’s been there- this is why women shouldn’t even attempt to discuss fertility issues with obgyns. they are surgeons- not reproductive endocrinologists. they don’t know anything about getting pregnant. a day 3 blood test for FSH, estradiol, and progesterone – reviewed by an RE – is the first step in diagnosis, then a sperm test for the partner, then the highly invasive due test.
it took 3 years of begging obgyns to listen to me to finally get fed up and get an RE on my own dime to discuss my not getting pg. in two weeks I had my answer from a simple blood test that obgyns denied me. I didn’t need to ‘relax’ or ‘take a vacation’ or ‘stop being silly’…i was in early menopause at 33.
if you are over 30 and don’t get pg in six months, demand a day 3 test. and take the results to an expert.
ps- it took 8 years, but I am due at the end of the month. and yes, we needed ART. embryo donation
could not be happier!

There is this thing professionals in this situation should try to use. It’s called Tact!

Actually, the appointment was already booked. The woman ought to have seen the doctor and the doctor should have told the patient herself that her office had made a mistake by not ordering the proper tests prior to the appointment, but in the meantime they’d talk strategy.
Anyone forced to cancel an appointment made two months in advance because office couldn’t get its act together should at least be allowed to keep the appointment. Useless or not.
