“I’d Like To Give You An Epidural At 4 CM So We Can Just Top You Off For The Cesarean…”
“I’d like to give you an epidural at 4 centimeters so we can just top you off for the cesarean section.” -OB to mother wanting an unmedicated birth during a VBAC consult.
Well Doc, I’d like to put my foot up your A$$,too- but I guess that ain’t gonna happen EITHER.So now, as I was saying- UNmedicated, and no procedure without INFORMED consent. If you have a problem with that, I can find someone else who doesn’t.

As a VBAC mom, this enrages me so much!!!!!!!! NOT that the other posts here don’t piss me off…but you know. ![]()
Ughhh what a crap ass dr. I have enough stories to fill a book from the idiotic, cruel, and plain insane things I’ve heard from OBs. *sighhhh*
To the OP, I hope you ran like hell from this loser and got the birth you wanted!

See, now, apparently, schools shouldn’t take it for granted that docs know how to listen. It should be a seperate class by itself. Poor doc’s wife.

Funny you should mention that. Doctors’ wives, and women who work in medical professions (especially nurses), have much higher rates of c-sections than other members of the general population.

What an ASS. Seriously, I am seeing red. That is just… just… AAAHHH *head’splode* >_<
(Honestly, that's my reaction to many of the entries here. When I post well- thought-out responses, it's usually after coming back two or three time, after calming down)

If this is a “trial of labour,” could we at least presume the mother is innocent of being incapable until proven otherwise?
In the meantime, Doc, you have the right to remain silent. Also to sit on your hands so you don’t get tempted to pick up the sharp instruments.
Sheesh!

It sounds like he was trying to say he prefers for VBACs to get epidurals because then if they end up in the OR, he can get the c/s done faster (I hate this logic, since the epidural increases her chance of ending up with a c/s). Sounds like he slipped up and unwittingly revealed just how much he expects her to fail.

But back in the day when only real VBAC doctors did VBAC’s epidural weren’t allowed. They wanted you to feel it if you ruptured! Arrgh. I know things change, but I’m thinking not for the best. Anybody listening, if a doctor says they will give you pain meds or augmentation during a VBAC FIND THE DOOR! I don’t really care that they have changed the offical protocal. They didn’t conduct double blind studies before they did so, and I don’t trust their judgement in the least.
Red, wishing you a wonderful birth.

I am of the OP of this quote and this was said to me by a VBAC-friendly (!) OB I interviewed when I was 6 weeks pregnant. This was just one of many run-like-hell comments he made during the course of our meeting.
It was very clear that he viewed a laboring woman’s experience as his own personal theater and wanted to control everything from which doula she chose to which songs HE was going to play on the guitar after the baby was born…weird!
After meeting him, I settled on a group of midwives who deliver in hospital for my VBAC. Then, at 23 weeks, I switched to a homebirth midwife. I’m now 39 weeks and happy, healthy, content, and waiting for baby

Dear Doctor:
When the patient is speaking, please listen to what she’s saying, and respond accordingly.
“unmedicated” =\= “epidural”
“VBAC” =\= “cesarean”
Thank you for your honesty, but in the future, just say “No, I won’t do that” rather than pretending to listen. We’ll all like it better that way.
Love,
Moms Of The World
