Thoughtful Thursday! “…You Obviously Know What You Are Doing.”
“Well, I’m not needed. You obviously know what you’re doing.” ~Lactation Consultant to mother less than 24 hours after second baby was born, after watching her son successfully latch on.
Awesome! Much better than the post-partum nurse who told me, “Even though it’s going well now, that can change. Take these formula samples.”

I had that with my first baby. She was fussy from the beginning (still is 3 years later). Our night nurse said, “You don’t have enough milk. Why don’t you supplement with formula?” Being the ignorant first-time mom I was, I gave her 2oz of formula, which she promptly threw up. The third night we were there, the same night nurse was back and said, “Oh, I see formula supplementation is working.” I said, “No, she threw up the only 2oz we gave her. My milk is in and we’re nursing exclusively fine.” The nurse’s response was, “Well, I’ll be back at 11 to take her for our tests.” Stupid me, I should’ve refused. Around 1, I woke up and had an overwhelming desire to go get my baby. When I got to the nursery, the nurses were drinking coffee while my baby screamed her head off! I pushed the buzzer. My nurse came to the door and said, “Can I help you?” (in that “why-are-you-bothering-me” way) I said, “Yes, give me my daughter now.” She said, “We’ll bring her to you in a few minutes.” I said, “No, check my bracelet and give her to me now.” I was furious!

**Disclaimer**
Yes, there are good nurses. Yes, some nurses are battered by horrible patients. No, neither was mentioned in the above story.

I had a LC say practically the same thing to me, he was being a lazy sucker.. and I knew that stimulating under his chin would help him be a more active sucker, she had 2 students with her and said, see look at that there’s a woman who knows what she is doing, Looks like you don’t need me but if you do, here’s my number..

I had a similar experience with a very nice LC after #2 was born. About an hour after the birth, she took a good look and exclaimed something like, “well, you two have a really great thing going on there! keep it up!” As opposed to with baby #1, where an LC told me I had beautiful nipples but that “those cracks are going to invite infections.” Ummm… never got any infections, but thanks for the weird compliment?

I’ve had LC’s like that. Last time my baby was in the NICU and I was doing the pumping thing for the first time. The LC was spectacularly helpful but also acknowledged I had some level of experience (having nursing 7 other children) she ended up just coming in to chat with me because she enjoyed talking with someone as passionate about breastfeeding as she was ![]()
I was also really impressed with the director of maternal/child nursing at another hospital (same pregnancy) who acknowledged she could maybe learn a thing or two from a mom. I was in the hospital for a non-pregnancy related issue. I was using a zofran pump to control my hyperemesis. She heard about me through the grapevine and came to my room to talk to me about the zofran pump and watch me use it because she had never seen one used and wasn’t knowledgeable about their use and HG. She probably stayed and talked with me a good 30 minutes.

I can only hope my BF experience is similar. I’m expecting my first soon, and I’m actually more nervous about the breastfeeding than I am about the labor and birth!

-Meghan, I was the same way!!! I just had my first. And I was way more uptight about breastfeeding than labor and delivery. Turns out, I had nothing to worry about…my boy knew just what to do!
I won’t say that it’s entirely easy at first, but it gets easier and it’s SO worth it! My labor and delivery went awesome too…all natural, he was completely awake and alert, ready to eat. *It helps when you don’t have drugs for the baby to be more alert.* Hope all goes well for you
