Thoughtful Thursday! “…You Could Even Birth A 10 Pounder…”
“Your body was made to do this…you could even birth a 10 pounder! Don’t let your tiny frame fool you!” -Home Birth Midwife to mother during a prenatal visit.
I had a similar comment with my last baby – after a pelvic exam, my midwife told me I could easily birth a 9 pound baby…turned out he was 11 pounds
. I’m glad we didn’t know his actual size, but her encouragement really helped me to not stress during that labor and birth.

I had almost the exact same thing said to me but it was right after my first baby was born. My FP doc, who delivered my baby, said that I could birth a 10+ pound baby. I have been confident with my other two that there would be no problems.

That is so awesome.

My OB said the same to me toward the end of my pregnancy, save the bit about the tiny frame, which I don’t have.
My baby was looking big-ish (which he estimates by feel, not by ultrasound), so he decided to give me a pep talk. I didn’t really feel that I needed one, but I appreciated the gesture.

A friend’s OB told her that she could birth :any child up to 9 pounds” to encourage her. (she is a teensy creature.)
Her son was almost 11. His response.
“I knew you could do it. And obviously you did too… you grew him! And ig babies are just the best, more to push against and they sleep really well.” He also commented while she was being stitched (natural tear) “These tears are better… you tear right where you can heal best.”
After a pregnancy full of her Boyfriend’s mom telling her she “can’t have a baby natural. I needed three c-sections and I’m twice the woman you are” the OB was refreshing. (plus he announced he was pulling a “Diva Doc” moment and kicked the horrible woman out of the delivery room after she yelled at the MTB and raised her blood pressure by more than ten points.)
I like when the baby catcher team believes in moms.

Yeah, Diva Doc was pretty cool. He delivered a lot of the babies of my high school friends. (mostly because he was the ONLY doctor who didn’t treat teen moms like slime.) He tended to be a bit forceful. (For instance he didn’t allow “planned” c-sections at all. He said that that wasn’t proper birth and it would be a violation of some doctor oath to allow women to willingly submit to mutilation for no reason. He also required all mothers under his care to at least attend a lactation class.)
And the old witch was in there because she bullied her son into it, and her son threatened not to show up and sign the birth cert. if Friend wouldn’t let his mother be in the delivery room. He abandoned Friend and Baby a week later anyway.

I’m liking this doctor more and more. I don’t believe in planned/scheduled c-sections either. I think if a mom is having an elective repeat c-section she should wait until labor starts so she knows that baby is ready. And I don’t care if I can’t talk her into just going with a trial of labor to see what happens and she really does get a doctor out of bed at 2 am to do a planned repeat c-section at 41.5 weeks. I think every baby that is not showing any signs of distress should get to pick his or her own birthday!
