“…You’ve Got Such A Lousy Track Record.”
“So, you’ve got one empty sac and one heartbeat in there. Everything looks good for that one, but I give it a 50/50 shot at best, because you’ve got such a lousy track record.” -ER doctor to mother presenting for vaginal bleeding early in pregnancy, after an ultrasound revealed a miscarried twin and a viable twin. The mother had suffered many prior pregnancy losses.
I had a similar situation with an ER doctor. I had just gone to the ER for vaginal bleeding as well and after we came back from the u/s and everything looked good (as well as finding out the sex), I told him (why? I don’t know) that it was a boy. He responded, “Don’t get your hopes up.”
That actually happened again in a subsequent pregnancy and after that experience, I stayed the hell away from the ER.

Working in the ER must be one of the most exhaustingly depressing and dehumanizing jobs ever to produce something this crass.
Doc, you need a new job. The change would in the best interests of yourself and your patients.
I’m sorry you had to hear this, OP. What a craptastic way of getting the news.

I also went to the ER for early bleeding. As I recall, that doctor was actually pretty nice. The OB I saw for the follow-up was, however, a real jerk. Based on blood tests he told me I’d probably miscarried and we’d have to to a DNC, but we’d do an ultrasound ‘just to make sure’, while using the f-word every three words or so. Hence that was the only OB/GYN appointment I have ever had with any MD.

This is the reason for the stereotype that ER doctors are the worst breakers of bad news on the planet. And in this case, the guy went out of his way to break bad news that by his own admission wasn’t even bad (“everything looks good for this one.”
Thank you, doctor, for finding the dark cloud inside this woman’s silver lining.
In the future, we’ll thank you to stick to “just the facts, doc.” *ugh* A bereaved mother already feels the odds are long. No need to make them feel even longer.

Yep, my experience with ER doctors has not been good either. It boggles my mind that people are so uncaring. Their opinions are not necessary. Just saying that one baby looked good would have been sufficient.
I hope that this mother went on to have a healthy pregnancy after this.
