“…Get Your Butt In Here On This Bed…”
“If you are doing that, you better get your butt in here on this bed and on a monitor.” – Nurse to a mother who was squatting in triage upon arrival.
Ugh. And when you say no, they just get a couple nurses to drag you by the arms to do what they want you to do. Even as you still scream no.
At least that’s what happened to me.

well, lets see….my butt has very little to do with this process right now, so leave it out of this I’m squatting because that is what feels right, if I found the bed comfortable that is where I would be. I don’t need your monitor to tell me what the baby is doing…I can figure that out for myself…and I’d love to share with you…THE BABY IS COMING… so either help me as I squat or shut the HE77 up.
Honestly, way to treat a birthing Mother like a delinquent 16 year old child.

Hmmm. “When you’re the one having the baby, feel free to put your butt on the bed or wherever you choose. Since I’m the one giving birth,I’ll use whatever position is right for me and my baby.” “Oh, and by the way, you’re fired. Get me a different nurse!” [itching to be able to say that to this nurse.” And, um, isn’t “manhandling” a patient assault? Can’t you yell “I do not consent!” to make that clear?

Get your — what? I don’t even talk that way to my kids!
I beg your pardon, but would you, nursey, please get your butt *out* of here and find someone with some respect for birth in general and this mother in particular?
My friend was held down on the bed during one of her labors. Assault is way not cool.
I’m sputtering!

Just to clarify – she thought the mother was squatting because she was about to give birth? As opposed to squatting to labor more comfortably? So Nurse was panicking? (:D How professional.)
Still no excuse to talk to ANYONE that way, let alone a laboring mother. ESPECIALLY a laboring mother. Golly.

But if she were squatting to give birth, would they really get out the monitor, or would they be screaming for the doctor and pulling on latex gloves?

Some of them would, you know, just to make sure she’s really in labor and not mistaking it for, say, a stomach ache or a bowel movement.
Didn’t anyone ever tell you that women don’t really know when they’re in labor?
That’s why the nurse has to check you – can’t have a baby without a cervical check first.

Nurse honey, how about you stop shouting demands and instead get down beside the woman and A) ask her what her name is (yes, we do appreciate being called by name) b ) start asking her questions about what’s going on with her body. Assumptions rarely help anyone and I doubt that lady needed yours at that point.
And I agree with Jane. If they really thought she was giving birth a monitor wouldn’t be part of the equation. They took my monitors off once I said I needed to push so I could move around as I needed to.

Claire, I don’t think women truly realize they can “fire” their doctors or nurses and request someone else during the delivery! I didn’t feel the need necessarily to do this, but do know someone who did. We both went to the same OB, and there was one midwife there who was horrible (finally I left the practice over her hideous bedside manner). The mom said she saw her coming and told another nurse, “Get her the @(%* out of here!” LOL I don’t know if I would have been that brave!

It’s so annoying that nurses and doctors (for the Most part) don’t seem to realize that women don’t have to be in bed to give birth. I arrived pushing at the hospital when giving birth to my little girl and was immediately put in bed even though I kept stating that I didn’t want to push in bed- I was doing just fine at home squatting! But of course they didn’t listen to me. Next time I’ll definitely just stay at home!!
