Thoughtful Thursday! “I Am Putting My Hands In My Pockets…”
“I am putting my hands in my pockets because there is nothing for me to do here. You are doing such a great job!” -OB to mother who was doubting her confidence to birth during a long labor.
I forgot who said this, that the most important thing a midwife has to learn is how to sit on her hands. How awesome that a doctor learned that!
And I love the empowerment of the words accompanied by a physical act – such a potent combination!

Dr. Bradley said that about Dr’s needing to learn how to sit on their hands.

My midwife told me that “At first I thought a midwife should be good with her hands. Then, I thought a good midwife should sit on her hands. Now, I figure a good midwife should knit with her hands. Being idle when you feel like you should be doing something doesn’t help anyone, so I keep busy.” She was so busy helping us deliver our HUGE vbac posterior baby, she didn’t do any knitting at our house – but, I avoided a c-section and have tried every birthing position except hanging by my toes.
After our homebirth, we (like her other clients) received a homemade baby sweater.

My mother’s OB said almost the same thing to her during her VBAC with my brother. Good guy.
