“…Your Placenta Could Fall Off And Your Baby Could Die.”
“If you stay pregnant, your placenta could fall off and your baby could die.” – OB to a mom who refused induction at 39 weeks and 6 days and had just had a Biophysical Profile with a perfect score.
As usual, Jane is guilty of making us all pee our pants with laughter today … LOL!
This kind of reminds me of the comment I once heard from someone that their doctor told them “her uterus could explode” if she tried a VBAC. I believe someone else’s doctor used the word “shatter.” WTF?

Glad to be of service.
I’ve heard the “uterus will explode” line too, but I can’t remember the circumstances. I said, “Rupture. The word is rupture. That means the uterine wall might pull apart like pizza dough that’s rolled out way too thin. It’s bad, and you don’t want it to happen, but little shards of uterus won’t go flying around the delivery room.”
Why do they do that?

And also I’m wondering, how much does it cost the insurance company to do a biophysical profile on a mom who’s not even overdue yet? Do the insurance companies even read these orders before paying a claim? $$$$

Omogoodness I’m so glad I spontaneously went into labor at 39w2d and 39w1d with my babies, I couldn’t imagine what I would’ve done 6 days later awaiting my impending uterine collapse! All those other mothers that have post 40w babies in their arms today should consider themselves lucky!……………..-_-

My BPP wasn’t scheduled until 41 weeks 5 days (all the non-stress tests were passed with flying colors).
Ironically, the very day we were to go in for the BPP, I went into labor. Her head hasn’t fallen off yet, and the placenta was just fine too.
I have a friend who has gone 3 weeks or so past her expiration date, er, estimated due date. One of those times she was at the hospital getting a BPP, when she went into labor. The nurses were stunned when she announced her intention of leaving to go HOME and birth her baby. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall and see their faces.

A friend of mine went in for an induction at 42w3d after planning a home birth. She went into labor on the way to the hospital, they did a quick u/s and trace, and then they said “Right, there’s nothing to keep you here, go home and have your baby”.
Mind you, this is New Zealand.

It always amazes me that doctors have no problems with babies that are early. My first was born at 38+4. If she had been 10 days late the world would have ended and “she would have died” My uterus would have exploded the minute I turned 40 weeks, the placenta would get mold and fall off, all sorts of horrors could happen because babies are not forced out on their expiration date, ahem Estimated Date of Confinement, Oops Estimated Due Date.

Exactly, Heather! It astonishes me that even though the risks to an early babe are FAR greater, they would rather them come sooner and take that risk then go longer and be safer. I know that risk rises by a fraction of a percent for truly post-term babes (43 weeks), but it’s just not as big a deal as a baby with potential breathing/sucking/swallowing problems from being too early.

Y’all. This is SERIOUS. Someone, quick, compile a list of all the things on this site that make babies DIE! Because, I mean, HOW MANY OF YOU are walking around with little UNDEAD ZOMBIE children RIGHT NOW because you had vbacs, or you were past dates, or you refused an IV in labor? ZOMBIE BABIES, people! THIS IS NO LAUGHING MATTER!!

And remember, just because your little zombie baby is kicking doesn’t mean it’s alive. That’s because it’s a zombie.

I really, really should not read comments and eat dinner at the same time. I could choke from laughing so hard with a mouthful of food. Or, more likely, have a mess to clean up.

I would love to hear more about this particular comment because… as far as my experience goes… they don’t even LOOK at the placenta during a BPP unless the attending specifically requests it. If no one looked at the placenta, or if they did and the placenta was fine, this doc was WAY out of line and probably should be reported for coercion…
BUT……
I had a BPP days before my daughter was born and SHE got a perfect 8 out of 8 on the profile, but my placenta was dying.
That’s a whole different story.
I was 39 weeks along too… but because of my health problems, the placenta was not in good shape and I was nowhere NEAR going into active labor, wasn’t dilated at all… and had been having prodromal labor for 2 weeks. I chose to have a repeat cesarean rather than wait for my body to go into spontaneous labor and VBAC because FOR ME, the risks that my placenta WOULD abrubpt were greater than the benefits of having a VBAC.
My healthy baby girl is now 2 weeks old.
