“Blimey! Looks Like The Mice Have Been At This!”
“Blimey! looks like the mice have been at this!’ – OB examining the mother’s perineum for tears after birth. The doctor then turned to her husband, and with a wink, asked ‘So, how tight do you want her, mate?”
I hope this ass was reported for sexual harassment. Do you think him making comments about his nurses’ perineums in the office environment would be acceptable? So why is it suddenly okay here? How disgusting. And done as if she can’t hear what he’s saying, or has no involvement or say in her care. Grrr…..

What a jerky thing to say. Contrast this with the OB who was doing a repair and, when the husband asked about “daddy stitches,” turned around and said bluntly, “Grow a bigger d*ck.”

It suddenly occurred to me why he said this: the “mice” comment probably indicates this was a natural tear, which is more jagged because it follows the line of the muscles, whereas an episiotomy follows the scissor blades and is straight.
He had NO CLUE how to repair a jagged tear–I’d bet ten bucks he took one look at that and realized he was going to bollox up the suturing, made the comment to make the woman think her body was defective (rather than her incompetent doctor) and then turned to the husband asking how tight he wanted her in order to give himself some leeway when he sutured her wrong and the scar tissue was uncomfortable and caused problems later.
In other words, this doctor wasn’t just the kind of person to treat the vagina as public property. This doctor was ALSO the special breed of incompetent that places the burden of his incompetency on everyone around him.
Nice work if you can get it, huh?

Contrast this “doctor”‘s attitude and, I’m sure, horrible job of stitching, with what happened to me 39 years ago: I, also tore extensively with the birth if my first child. My OB never said anything negative, just started stitching, and took 45 minutes to make sure everything was perfect. The next day, while checking on his work, he told me he’d, basically, done plastic surgery on me. I never had any scarring or problems, and, in my subsequent 4 births, only needed one stitch with two of my babies.

Ah, but you had a professional. The only time I tore was behind an episiotomy (unnecessary) for my first birth. I don’t know whether he just didn’t suture it right, but every so often for the next three years it would “pinch” sometimes, and then after my second birth, there was a slight tear on the scar (one stitch, and they debated doing that.) No tearing or stitching for the next three births.
(One midwife joked, “I’m no good at suturing because I almost never do it.” LOL!)

Well, it makes me sick too.. so I’ll try to lighten the mood a little. I know it isn’t Thoughtful Thursday, but I also know many of you know I was waiting to have my baby. Well I did at 4:16 this morning 10lbs 1oz, born at home in the water, as planned, I LOVE my Midwife! Also, no mice here, I didn’t even tear!!
Thanks for all your support last Thursday ladies!

It happened in the UK. Not all our doctors are saints either, same as some of our midwives. We repair more perineal tears here, because we don’t routinely do episiotomies (I have done 5 in the 8 years have been a midwife). As a result, we are much more skilled at perineal repair. I believe the doctor we are talking about was a middle grade (what you call a resident and we call a registrar), and he got into trouble with the General Medical Council (or GMC- the UK’s medical regulating body). I don’t think he was struck off, but he got into trouble.

Did this gem of an obstetrician get his med school tuition fully funded by Roissy or something? What a swine.
