Not at all, I have Ehlers-Danlos Hypermobility, its a fairly rare genetic disorder that, ultimately, have very little impact on pregnancy. It does raise the risk for placenta previa, which is why I was seeing an OB before I sought a midwife, because I wanted an ultrasound to rule out placenta previa. Doctors familiar with EDH say its NOT a reason to consider a pregnancy high risk and most EDH pregnancies will be low risk. This doctor agreed to order the ultrasound to check for potential high risk, then sent me a letter denying me care because I was “high risk due to Ehlers-Danlos” BEFORE she received the ultrasound results which confirmed a low risk pregnancy. I had the phone conversation with her because I wanted her notes to reflect that she had made this decision before she had seen the ultrasound, it went downhill from there. All the rest of the regular OBs in town refused to see me to begin with because they were unfamiliar with my disorder, leaving me with only the High Risk OBs at the teaching hospital willing to see me, and, since this doctor said I was ‘high risk’, bogus or not, the 1 and only legal midwife in the extended area, who was perfectly comfortable with my situation, is legally prohibited from seeing me. BTW the high risk OBs agree, ehlers-danlos hypermobility isn’t a reason to consider a pregnancy high risk.

Jespren, I really hope you are able to have the birth you want. I wish I had suggestions, but I’m at a loss. Just remember, you have the right to refuse services. You may have to ask for an AMA form (I had to do so with my son), but do so with caution. You will have to walk a fine line between pushing for the birth you want and safety. May I ask why she insisted on considering you high-risk?

This was mine, the OB was using this bogus ‘high risk’ lable to risk me out of her clinic, and, by the laws in this state, out of midwife care. This OB also lied to me about her c-section rate. Throughout this pregnancy I’ve been lied to repeatedly, had appointments summarily canceled, records reflecting the opposite of what the OB said to me in peron, my records lost 4 times, and had the doula we contracted in early pregnancy suddenly stop returning calls/texts/messages and disappear on us. I’m stuck without any choice to change providers with the ‘high risk fellows’ in the local teaching hospital (who lost the records 2 of the 4 times), they are the only ones who will see me. There are 8 of them in the fellowship and they won’t even tell me who I am scheduled to see for a prenatal appointment. Its been a certified disaster that just keeps getting worse, still 4 weeks to go.

I hope the arrogant comment is all this woman got, unlike Samantha Burton in Florida, whose doctor got a court order forcing her to stay in the hospital when she wanted to seek a second opinion.

That’s me exactly… “high risk” and trying for a VBAC after researching for the past 3 years… switched docs 3 times this pregnancy! If that makes me arrogant, I am ok with that!

Oh, you’re so right doctor, I have been so arrogant to decide that I want to consult multiple resources to determine my own health care. Thank you for helping me see the error of my ways. I will therefore pass off all responsibility of my body to you. You don’t mind me calling at 2:00am because the prenatal vitamins you prescribed are making me constipated, do you? You know more about my body than I do and I should consult you in everything.
