“Your Husband Can’t Be In The OR Because You Will Look Dead…”
“Your husband can’t be in the OR because you will look dead, and that might freak him out.” -OB to mother during VBAC consult on what might happen in the event of uterine rupture and the need for an emergency cesarean under general anesthesia.
well- I suppose that’s better than: ” your husband can’t be in the OR while you’re under general anesthesia, because he might see us screw up and kill you and the baby….”
but only marginally better….

A support person can be at a woman’s side if she has a spinal or epidural and she is awake and therefore, can be supported. If it is a stat C/S and they do general anesthesia, she is not awake.

I was the recipient of this gold-plated comment by the first OB I interviewed on my quest for finding the right VBAC provider.
We went from talking about how much he “supported” VBAC to all of a sudden me being “dead” in the OR. I kept thinking, ‘How did we get here? I didn’t come to talk about the ramifications of rupture.’
All I could picture after he said this was me “dead”, my husband standing out in the hallway, and my baby being born into a cold room full of masked strangers. No thanks.
Needless to say, I’m taking my birth elsewehere, thank you very much!

Yeah, because he’s totally stupid and doesn’t know the difference between anesthesia and death. And he won’t know what all those blinking beepy machines are so he won’t be able to figure out that if I have a pulse and blood pressure, I’m not really dead yet.
