“I Thought You Wanted To Do This All Yourself?”
“I thought you wanted to do this all yourself?” -OB to home birth transfer mom during pushing when she asked the doctor to support her perineum in order to avoid tearing.
In other words, I’m going to be cruel to you because you decided not to do things “my way,” or I’m stalling for a minute because I have no idea what the hell you’re talking about.

I’m voting for cruel…my mother had to transfer after I was born due to a retained placenta, and the on-call doctor reached in and removed it manually without any pain meds for my mom, because he was ticked that she had a homebirth. So not kidding. Oh, and he stitched up her tear without lidocaine, too.

It’s too bad that the “lawsuit happy lawyers” weren’t around back then! They’d have a field day with that one! What a pig!

Just a guess, but I bet what she wanted was educated support from someone who understands more about birth than watching monitors and making cuts, and who delivers that support without the snark.

You have no idea how prevalent this kind of attitude is among OBs and nurses toward homebirth transfers. EVERY woman I know who had to transfer before or after their homebirth was treated poorly. We transferred after my sons homebirth because of some complications, and the hospital staff were incredibly hostile toward me. It got so bad that I was afraid the NICU nurses might not properly care for my son because of how they felt about my choice to have a homebirth. Its sick, and we need to raise awareness and make it clear this behaviour is unacceptable.

This one is mine, and the doctor was horrid from beginning to end. She even called in the hospital therapist after wards and insisted that I must be mentally impaired because I planned a homebirth. Then she sent me a bill for an additional $500 after the hospital bill for “personal services”. I refused to pay.
I also had my next one at home.

“Yes, doctor, you’re quite right, I can do much better without you. Get the @#$% out of the room. Hubby (or doula, or other support personnel) . . . will you get him/her the hell out of here, and then come support my perineum please? Thank you!”
