“I Don’t Care About The Mother. I Care About That Baby!”
“I don’t care about the mother. I care about that baby!”-Perinatologist to couple dealing with pregnancy complications.

I read in Sheila Kitzinger’s book that Martin Luther (1483–1546) said, If [women] become tired or even die, that does not matter. Let them die in childbirth–that is why they are there.
Sounds like this fellow hasn’t evolved much in the past 600 years!

Huh. I wonder at what point that was said? I.e. before or after his own marriage, the births of his children? Yes, culturally things were very different then. I am sure part of that was due to the “coping mechanisms” of the very high mortality rates. If there was no rationalization, to somehow work past the horrific rates of death, what do you do with that? How do you stay sane?
Obviously there’s no excuse for de-valuing human life, in any context.

Yeah, that doesn’t really sound like Luther — this is the same guy who talked about the fact that there’s nothing more holy that a father can do than change his infant’s dirty diaper, and that he felt happiest when he was eating, singing, and talking with his wife and children.
I wonder about the context, too. Obviously Luther wasn’t perfect by any stretch (hello, anti-Semitism!) but his views on women and family tend to be pretty solid.

Well gee, thanks for being honest. *Blink*
I’d like to hear the full story from whomever this happened to. I can only imagine … Well, then again maybe I can’t. :/

Micki, I so sorry you treated this way while you sought medical care. For not just one, but at least two “care” providers to treat you this way is awful to say the least.
I’m glad you went on to have better births for your younger children.

Grrrrrr… this makes me see red. When I was hospitalized during my third pregnancy, the doctors told me the opposite, that they didn’t care if my baby lived or died; they only cared about me. How about doctors (my phone just suggested that I was trying to type “dictator” – how appropriate) stop trying to decide whose life is more important. Just fully inform us of all the risks and let us decide what to do!!

Nice… who cares about the mom anyway? She’s just a vessel.
