“Oh, I Know That You Are Concerned About Tearing…”
“Oh, I know that you are concerned about tearing. You should get the epidural so that I can control your pushing to prevent tearing.” – OB to a mom concerned about tearing due to scar tissue.
So let’s see, my body could give me immediate information about how well it’s faring, and based on that I could make decisions and react instinctively to my own physical sensations.
Or you could cut off those physical sensations and make guesses based on the law of averages, which you can then relate to me verbally and I can react to after I’ve processed them.
And then, Doc, on the way home, I would like you to blindfold yourself and have the person in the passenger seat control your driving to prevent an accident. “Okay, the light is red now. Wait for it. Okay, now it’s green, so start. Faster than that….faster….no, that’s too fast…Now ease into the left lane…”

Do mothers REALLY worry about tearing?? I mean, yeah, you do- up until the minute you’re in labor! Tear or no tear, I’m pushing this baby OUT!

I think she was worried about tearing through her scar tissue.
With my first baby, my amazing CNM, who had been at the hospital for about 15 of the 25 hours I was in labor, sat at my wide spread legs, and massaged my perenium (sp?) with oil for 3 hours at the end because I told her that I wanted to tear instead of getting an episiotomy, and she wanted to make sure I had a fast recovery
I’m so sad that she left
but she went to teach med students how to sit back and let nature do its job! She is teaching med students about natural, intervention free birth in WV! I just hope that one of those Drs makes their way down here (SC) soon

Uhmm..so that THEY can control pushing?? I don’t think so buddy! The only reason ‘should’ and ‘epidural’ should be mentioned in the one sentence are when it’s absolutely necessary too!
