Actually, Nurse Stupid Head, nubain is a narcotic. If it was “just like Tylenol” I could go into any drug store and get it over the counter.

And it can make you nauseous. That’s why I had them give me only 50% of a full dose. I wanted to remain lucid and not puking.

I find this very interesting also. I am not autistic but I too have a huge tolerance to opiates(which often means that the dose a Dr is willing to give you is entirely ineffective) Most Drs look at me like I am some drug addict when i tell them that their entire dose (or 2) is doing absolutely F all for my pain. My mother on the other hand is extremely sensitive to even the lowest of doses and has trouble convincing anyone that an eighth of a dose of pethidine will be more than enough to knock her out for 2 days.

Nubain is Nalbuphine hydrochloride.
It is a narcotic analgesic. It does cross the placenta and can cause fetal distress, heart rate decels and respiratory depression in the baby.

Demerol is meperidine/pethidine.
Demerol is actually a category D drug (really not safe- also a narcotic) when used at term. It crosses the placenta and can cause respiratory depression when used in labor.

it IS in the same drug “family” as morphine. Any opioid-receptor agonist is a Narcotic. From what I have now gathered to be Nubain, it IS a narcotic, hence, same drug family as morphine.

when I had my son, I was 15, and accidentally given close to double the pethidine I should have received. I was unconscious from 7cm right up to pushing.

Now, why they did not just say “we cannot give peth when you hit transition” I will never know, because my prem son had respiratory issues because of it, I had a lovely lothotomy delivery and 4* tear. I did not see my son until 2 hours after he was born because I was so groggy, and did not hold him until the next day. I remember only bits of the actual delivery because I was so in and out. But my mum remembers it all.

Ok one thing that annoys the HELL out of me… What ARE Nubain and Demerol? They are trade names that exist only in the USA. Just like Tylenol is Panadol here, it is paracetamol/acetaminophen that is given a trade name by the company that bottles it. Can someone please tell me what demerol and numabin are because its driving me up the wall.

It is not a common condition, but it is more common that you may think, can be in response to a viral infection or viral immunization, and can resolve spontaneously. I have a friend whose son had it for about three weeks after a vaccination.

Doubtful, given that I got my arm back after a few weeks. As I understand it, not only is Guillain Barre extremely rare, it’s also permanent.

Just so you know, the paralysis was probably Guillain Barre syndrome.
