Thoughtful Thursday! “…She’s GOING To Have A VBAC!”
“This is (insert patient name) and she’s trying for a VBAC. Oh, no, I’m sorry, she’s GOING to have a VBAC!” – L&D nurse introducing her patient to the new nurse coming on shift.
Sure I’ll take the VBAC special with a side of Ruptured Uterus Please!!!!!!

Risk of rupture is about .5%. There are more serious risks with a repeat C-section!!!

Seriously, why do people keep citing that “fact”? Go read the medical studies on that subject – the risk is not even 1% higher than in a first time vaginal birth. Yes, the risk of uterine rupture is possible in ALL pregnancies! I am so very tired of the willful ignorance and fear mongering.
This is like saying you can’t ever walk again after breaking a leg. The human body is a remarkable, resilient organism. We do it a great disservice by allowing constant medical unnecessary intervention.

I’ll take the less than 1% chance of uterine rupture over the NUMEROUS risks, side effects, and long term complications of a cesarean section anyday. Still have pains now and then, and numbness around the scar area from a c-section over 2 years ago. Biggest complaint from my VBAC was it started in the middle of the night and it’s hell trying to wake up my husband.

Be informed people. Don’t take for granted everything ANYBODY tells you.

Um, Jeanette, I think you’re on the wrong site.

You sound kinda like my family who told me I was going to die, my baby was going to die, and everything was going to hell. ahem. It was a beautiful experience with none of them in attendence, but they do like to give big kisses to my sweet daughter.
Yay for VBACs.

Sorry, I clicked “dislike” when I meant “like.” Just in case anyone wonders.

I like it.. as long as she wasn’t being sarcastic.
Also ladies, be sure to have your Dr. stitch up your uterus in two layers instead of one so your chances of having a uterine rupture is lessened and your chances for having a successful VBAC is greater. [when having a c-section]

Since it was submitted under Thoughtful Thursday, I doubt it was sarcastic. What a great nurse!!
**I totally agree with you about the double layer of stitches. Unfortunately I have no idea if I have that or not. My dr never told me, and neither I nor a Navy commander/OB were able to get the hospital to send out my operative report. Stupid Puerto Rico hospital…GRRRR.
Thankfully I still had my VBAC.
But yeah, I will never know LOL.

This was a client of mine. The nurse was in no way sarcastic, she was wonderfully supportive of my client. My client went on to VBAC a baby that was TWO POUNDS bigger than her C-section baby, in part to wonderful nurses and midwives, who encouraged her the entire time.
