“I Told The Nurse To Let You Do Whatever You Want Because…”
“I told the nurse to let you do whatever you want because you will be a cesarean either way.” -OB to mother who refused pitocin after 4 hours of labor.
Amazing. Was he leaving soon to go on vacation? Was it a weekend? Or close to dinner time? Bed time? This is a dangerous person here. Very dangerous.

It is no wonder there are so many c-sections with attitudes like this!
I was sitting chatting with a group of new moms recently (who all gave birth in the same hospital) when I realized that of the seven moms, 4 had unplanned c-sections! That’s 57%!
Aaargh!

My nurse told me after I’d been at the hospital an hour that I should just get the epidural since I was going to have a cesarean anyway. I guess she had talked with the doctor and they had decided that based on observing me for less than an hour.
And my friend told me last night that she had to have a cesarean because when you have Gestational Diabetes you have to have a cesarean. She believed it. She is teeny tiny but her baby was too, only 4 lbs 10 oz at 40 weeks. Scheduled cesarean for GD.

After I had my c-section, the nurse who had been with me during most of my 43 hour unmedicated labour (13 hours on pitocin) came back on shift. When she learned about my c-section she said, “oh, I thought you would have a c-section”. Aargh!!! she was the one who insisted I stay in bed most of the time attached to the external fetal monitor because the mobile unit didn’t work.
It is amazing anyone has a natural birth in that hospital!

And his proof for this was….? The issue leading to the inevitable cesarean was…? The science backing his pronouncement was…?
And by “whatever you want,” did that include things like eating during labor, not having monitoring, walking around, laboring in the tub, turning down the lights, not being bothered by random staff, refusing an episiotomy and delivering in whatever position she felt comfortable?
