“You Don’t Know How Labor Will ‘Pan Out’…”
“You don’t know how labor will “pan-out” so keep an open mind.” – OB during prenatal for first time mother when she expressed a desire for a natural birth.
The open mind thing works both ways: some women go to the hospital absolutely certain they want an epidural and they don’t get it for one reason or another.
Birth is art in motion. Things can change mid-stream….just like parenting.

Absolutely right.

I actually like this comment. Its true that labor doesn’t always go to plan. But I think more questioning of the doc’s routine procedures would be in order to determine how they actually feel about natural birth. If they support natural birth they won’t routinely induce, augment, NPO, continuously monitor, do episiotomies, etc.

“Actually dr, having done the research, I’m not comfortable with the side effects and health risks of epidurals in particular, but thanks anyway.”
GAAAAAAAAH the attitude of so many OBs pisses me off to no end!

They’re not 100% bad though. When used routinely with no indication, I agree completely, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have their place. I was induced due to pre-eclampsia, and my blood pressure was getting dangerously high, but after I was given an epidural my blood pressure dropped to much safer levels (and this was after I was given other medication to specifically bring my blood pressure down – no dice). I fully believe that my epidural saved me from a c-section.
Again, in a normal labour, I agree with you completely. But it is worth mentioning that even epidurals have their time and place.

it doesn’t sound like OB was trying to push interventions, but trying to lay the foundation for trust.
She can respect your desire for a natural birth, but she can’t promise you one since no one controls all the factors. So you just have to wait and see how it “pans out”
makes sense to me

Actually, this IS how I thought of birth the first time. I was unsure how things would go and kept my options open. The birth educator said that it’s very possible to go without an epidural, and the best policy is to wait 15 minutes after you feel you cannot go on and see if you still think you need it. I was also told at 8cm, I wouldn’t be able to get anything for the pain. So, I just kept going another 15 minutes and I never did get any pain meds. I do think this statement can be okay as long as the OB stresses, and I mean stresses, that he/she will support the mom in whatever decision she makes for pain medication. Pushing meds on mom, not okay. Allowing the option is ok in my opinion. Telling her she likely CAN go without is even better, that many women have done it and she probably can too.
