“…That Is A Big Head!”
umm.. yeah. When I was pregnant with my oldest and was discussing the (possible) size of my baby, as I was huge! She assured me that it would be about 7lbs, maybe a bit more.. when they weighed her, she was 9lbs 3oz and 22 1/2in long. You just can’t tell, period. Sometimes I say out loud while reading these.. “dill hole”

I couldn’t agree with you more on the “dill hole” thing! I can’t even tell you the countless stories I’ve heard of doc’s suggesting (and getting away with!) or forcing a mom to get induced or schedule a c-section because the baby’s head was too big or baby was too big…only to produce a 7 pound baby! Those ultrasounds aren’t the most accurate..they can be wrong either way (baby said to be small, and comes out big, or baby said to be big and comes out normal size!)

Generally you don’t grow babies you can’t fit through your birth canal. Yes, it happens, but it’s very very rare. I’m a 5’4″ lady who pre pregnancy weighed 120lbs and I gave birth, naturally, at home, to a 10lb 10oz baby with a 15 1/4″ head with a very minor tear. Only pushed for 5 minutes (he was my 2nd, my first was much smaller). I’m sure flat on my back with an epidural he might not have come out, but I had gravity working for me!

For every induction due to size, the doctor should have to pay the mother $10,000 if the baby’s estimated weight is off by two pounds, $100,000 if it’s off by three pounds.
If the estimated weight was so badly off that the baby ends up in NICU because of doctor-induced prematurity, the doctor should be issued a restraining order keeping him more than 50 feet from any ultrasound machines or ultrasound reports.
(BTW, the midwife under-guessed my fifth baby’s size by two pounds *after* he was born. They were very surprised when the scale tipped at 9 pounds even. Sometimes, they fool you.)

I’m not sure what my younger son’s head size was, but he weighed 9 lb., and looked it (to the midwives — it had been so long since I’d seen a newborn that I thought he was in the 7-lb range), and he didn’t have even a smidge of head molding. I only pushed a few times with him, too, with only “skid marks.” So much for “big baby = long pushing phase and/or tearing and/or cone-head”!

SO TRUE!
I’ve actually found that my clients with bigger babies tend to have less tearing than the clients with smaller babies…mostly because I see those smaller babies blast right out, not allowing time for the tissues to stretch.
Of course in your case, your body was experienced, not to mention that you were probably truly ready to push, not just pushing because you were 10 cm.

My first little one was 11 days past the EDD and she was my lightest, 7lb13oz.
I hate the “big head” comments from providers. The heads are designed to move through the cervix and birth canal. I just can’t wrap my mind around how so many OBs seem to willingly forget this.

Let’s also remember the overlapping plates of the skull – molding – and the ‘stretchiness’ of the pelvic outlet because of the ligaments – did he learn about those? Or are they still comparing it to a bowling ball through a straw?
It’s more like one of those smushy balls through a tube sock.
Facts, gentlemen, let’s stick to the facts.

I delivered a 12 pound baby at home without drugs, and it wasn’t the head that posed a problem….it was the football player shoulders. The DR pulled one arm to get him out, which resulted in a broken arm, but in a week or so he was completelt healed. I had NO tears.

My dr was off for my second guessing 6-7 lbs and she was 8lb 6oz. No tears though. Im glad she guessed low so i wasn’t going in thinking “man how is she gonna fit?!”

This reeks of a golf tournament or a vacation cruise. Which was it?
And how big was the baby, really?
