“I wouldn’t let my wife or daughter do it, but if there’s anyone who should try it, you’re the one.” -OB to mother after hearing her plans for a home birth.

Geee, dad, thanks. I love that I’m a grown up having my own kids and you won’t ‘let’ me do stuff still!

I have mixed thoughts about this one.
1. The OB doesn’t have authority over his wife or grown daughter.

2. He seemed to feel that the mom was a good candidate for home birth.

hmmm, does this mean he feels she is more trusted to handle birth on her own? and the ob doesnt think his wife or daughter could handle it? hmmm, that show alot of confidence in the wife and daughter (sarcasm)… not!

Well, I guess he would “let” her do it, because he isn’t in charge of her like he is his wife and daughter. Which is more than some OBs will admit. So….one step forward, two steps back?

This was my story. He was basically saying that he thought it was extremely risky and stupid, but that I was bullheaded enough to do it anyway, despite his misgivings.

He ended the appointment with: “Please be sure and call me afterward and let me know that you and the baby survived!”

I went on to have a fabulous home birth and yes, I did call and let him know that I survived. He was pretty incredulous that nothing went wrong.
