“You Wouldn’t Tell A Pilot How To Fly A Plane.”
“You wouldn’t tell a pilot how to fly a plane.” -OB to a laboring woman, also a pilot, who questioned the Ob’s suggested labor management.
Yep doc, I am the pilot of this plane (my body) and I make decisions about what I need. Are you going to co-pilot with me or not?

Not even co-pilot…MECHANIC. In other words…the OB should only be assessing to make sure that everything is functioning properly…and if it is functioning properly…then stand back and let it work!

Yes, mechanic. However, I am going for a midwife this time because my OB mechanics never show up and don’t support me, so there has to be a middle ground for someone who can BE THERE in the process to SUPPORT and direct…and then be mechanicy when it’s an emergent situation.

Yet more evidence that the medical system in general TRULY believe they control women/own women who are giving birth.
When someone asks a question about a suggested procedure for their body, why is it SO HARD just to answer the question instead of playing the mind games?!

Without the mindgames (they establish a hierarchy of power) the whole system would crumble. Those comments maintain the hierarchy.

If you wouldn’t tell a pilot how to fly a plane why would you tell a mother how to birth a baby? Didn’t he just make her point for her?
[Reply]
i sure as hell would if he was piloting it into the ground.

“Dude. You are neither authorized, nor licensed to fly this plane…deplane immediately, please.”
or “I’m contacting Homeland Security.”
Now look what (s)he’s gone and made me do…using bad analogies. To behonet, I would have said that to my OB while in labor. I’m pretty mouthy.
I also loathe Homeland Security (Hurry call the Feds!) and the term “deplane”.

I meant “be honest”…not behonet…now I’m making up words here!

This one gets the award for best foot in mouth comment.
Its just an absurd comment anyway. An OB is not flying a woman’s body. Nor is he/she in charge of it. If anything he’s the guy in the back seat of the cockpit who reads the instrument panel and consults the pilot (the mother) on what she would like to do. The mother is not the passenger.
But to say such a comment to a pilot herself and say she wouldn’t consult a pilot is just priceless.

I would if I owned the plane, and last time I checked, I own this body and I hired you.

Exactly. If I hired a pilot to fly MY plane, and he was trying to force the plane to do something it wasn’t meant to do, darn right I’d say something. In fact, I don’t generally have an issue with making sure that people I have *hired* do what I expect of them. The butcher doesn’t get mad when I tell him which piece of meat I want, and how to cut it. The mechanic doesn’t object when I say that today I only want the breaks checked, not the oil changed. The exterminator listens to my concerns about which pesticides he’s using, answers my questions factually, and lets me make my own decisions about what services I want from him. And you know what, I don’t know a darn thing about butchering, fixing cars, or exterminating pests, which is *why* I hire other people to do those things. So why does the doctor think he’s special?
