“See…Threaten Them A Little And They Push Harder.”
“See all you have to do is threaten them a little and they push harder.” -OB commenting to the nurse, after informing a first time mother pushing on her back for 30 minutes that they would need to discuss other options if she didn’t get the baby under her pubic bone.
At least the OB admitted the cutting her open was a non-desirable outcome. Most of the OBs I’ve talked to say it’s just a c-section or just an episiotomy or just a vacuum extraction and no big deal.
Beyond that, THREATEN? The OB feels so out of control as to resort to threats to aid a natural process?

How sad! Dd was transverse occupit and posterior (a fancy way to say her face was towards my inner thigh and she was looking upwards). It took a lot to get her past my pubic bone…but DH made it happen by applying gentle downwards pressure while I pushed with my contractions.
I can’t imagine being forced to lie on my back and simply push harder b/c someone is threatening me with a c-section. GAH

This makes me feel so ill to hear this one. If I hadn’t been pushing on my back with my first it would have been so much easier. And they did something to scare me so that baby was out in about 3 pushes more. The adrenaline rush that I got was not a good one. It was scary.

Uhmmm…mothers can push for hours. Sadly, pushing flat on your back is least effective unless it’s a special situation (like ONE position to change an OP baby…I was encouraged after an hour and a half on my flat back to move left, right, hands knees, squat, and then flat back with knees up to chest and go through it all again…and baby turned…but not when I was only flat backed).

This happened to my neighbor. At 41 weeks, she’d labored for 10 hours and then pushed for 2 when her OB started saying it was time to start thinking about the vacuum or a c-section (even though the baby was doing fine). She basically said “no way in h*ll” and pushed her 9lb 12oz baby out within the hour.
As a side note, her OB’s first comment following the baby’s birth was “next time I won’t let you go past 38 weeks.” *rolls eyes*

After pushing for about 2 1/2 hours, my midwife threatened an episiotomy on me. I was shocked that she would do that, but determined NOT to have that. I said, “I’ll push harder” and did, and low and behold, she came–with her hand up by her ear!!! Tore my cervix and everything!!!
