“…Leave It All Up To Me And I’ll Take Good Care Of You.”
At 12 week prenatal appointment;
OB: “So, are you reading books about birth?”
Mother: “Yes, I am…”
OB: “Well, don’t bother, nobody has any control over labor, least of all the laboring woman. Just leave it all up to me, and I’ll take good care of you.”
This one just gives me the heebie jeebies.
I actually was just talking to a woman in her fourth month, and she said at the very end of the conversation that she wasn’t so comfortable with her OB. I told her if she wasn’t comfortable NOW, with her hormones as unpredictable as they are, she’ll be miserable with this OB while in labor, when she’ll have hormones ricocheting around the room. I hope I convinced her…

I’ve had OB’s take great care of me in labor…they show up AFTER my babies are born. I’ve had 6 births, and OB’s come in either for the last 15 mintues (the first OB actually did check on me many times and I had a great nurse). 3rd birth I had the OB for the last two minutes…after that my family doc and OB’s have all missed the birth. The 6th birth there were 2 OB’s on the floor for me, but they were only in the room maybe 5 minutes at a time. Even with that, my baby was born without an OB in the room. He had checked me and declared baby high and floating…and left. Ten minutes later he ran in to see the nurses taking the membranes off my baby and to pull my placenta out. Yes, he took great care of me. I think birth is better for me with the staff leaving me alone anyway, since I’m not having my first anymore. However, with the 1st I needed that labor support.
So yeah, you take great care of women in labor from afar looking at computer screens OR listening to nurses on the phone who look at computer screens.

Why did Dr. Hannibal Lecter come to mind when I read this?
“Nobody has control of labor…least of all the laboring woman.”
I will make sure that I tell women to keep a Magic 8 Ball handy in case they go in to labor when they’re all alone…maybe it can consult them.

This poster must be in South Texas. Doctors here in Corpus Christi do NOT allow patients to use doulas because they “undermine the doctor’s authority.” What about the authority of the PATIENT? Oh–and midwives? Not allowed to attend births in hospitals.

“Nobody has control over labor, that’s why I’m going to induce you early and probably do a c-section so we can just avoid it altogether, ‘kay?”
What a jackass. “Don’t bother reading” because you’ll know more than I want you to and might actually be able to make informed decisions about your care.

“Oh, that’s good to know. So you’ll be with me every minute of my labor? You’ll memorize all my preferences so that every time a decision must be made, you’ll be making it in my best interests rather than the hospital’s best interests? You’ll get to know me thoroughly during our routine prenatal exams so you’ll understand my personal philosophies of life and birth? You’ll magically impart unto me wisdom of natural processes so that whenever anything happens, I’ll intuitively understand what is normal and what is something that needs treatment,and thereby not panic? Oh, you won’t…? Oh, then you won’t mind if I call you four times a day with questions….? Oh, you do? THen you know what, I think I’ll read my books. With another practice. Thanks.”

I think that a version of this statement should be included in each and every provider interview a woman conducts.
The expressions you would get would be priceless.
