“…You Make Milk Like A Teenager!”
Wow, how old are you? You make milk like a teenager!” -Lactation Consultant to mother with one day old son, during a lactation visit, after pinching her nipples to “milk” her.
Apparently the theory is that your prolactin level drop as you age. However, my sister’s mother-in-law has breastfed all her kids, and apparently even though she’s over 40 and a grandma (gasp!) her prolactin levels are fine.

Ah, I guess that makes sense… I didn’t have my first till I was 25, so I guess I never got to find out for myself…

Well, then, I’m glad I waited until I was 27 to have my first child, because I have over-supply issues as it is — I can only imagine how much I might have made if I had had children in my teens! Enough for full-term quads or quints?!?

Shouldn’t somebody who knows how teenagers lactate when you squeeze their nipples be on a register somewhere? Just a thought…
Surely the comment should have been ‘you lactate like a normal mother whose body is working properly?’
Or ‘Sorry i touched you inappropriately, I apologise unreservedly, please don’t report me!’

OK thumbs down for the sheer idiocy of saying it. But yes, the info is correct. Younger mums make more milk I could feed my son from one side a full feed and still pump a 200 mL bottle if I felt the need. Sadly though, teen mums are also less likely to breastfeed.

The LC in the hospital when my daughter was born didn’t just squeeze my nipple, she grabbed, yanked, pulled and crammed it into my daughter’s mouth. Then she got all pissed when I hollered in pain and my daughter was shocked off the breast. “You ruined a good latch!”

Well, I am one of those mamas who had a HUGE supply and pretty much drowned my kids when I BF. I was a teenager (19) when I had my 1st and only 21 when I had my 2nd and was certainly not short on milk. Unfortunately, despite (or because) my huge supply, I didn’t succeed in BF my 1st for very long because I had no support whatsoever to get it established, we had a poor latch, clicky tongue, drowsy baby, little sucking reflex, he hated anything touching his mouth, I had HUGE boobs and it all fell apart around day 5
all was resolved with #2. Of course if I knew all that I did when I had my 2nd when I had my 1st I would have tried harder, persisted more but I didn’t and it was the right decision at the time.

And how exactly does a teenager make milk?
