“He’s Much Too Big To Be Breastfed!”
“He’s much too big to be breastfed!”- Pediatrician to mother at 2 week visit, telling her that her baby who weighed 10 1/2 lbs at birth required supplementation with artificial breastmilk.
My 8 month old son is around 19-20 lbs and is still exclusively breastfed

Liz, I would love to hear more about this. I had intended to exclusively breastfeed until at least 9 months before starting on solids (had actually been considering a year, but figured we’d start ‘trying’ solid foods around 9 months) but got so much flax from my family and doctor saying it was unhealthy and that by 6 months they NEEDED some solids that at 7 months I gave in and started some solids. I didn’t wean him then, but did ‘supplement’ solids, by 8 months he was eating 3 meals a day nearly every day. I breastfed until 7 months because I was able to find some research articles that found no difference between iron and vit D defincency in babies exclusively breastfed until 7 months when compared to 6 months. But was unable to find anything supporting or even mentioning exclusive breastfeeding past 7 months. I am pregnant again and will be breastfeeding again. If you were able to find any information/research on nutricitial needs/extended exclusive breastfeeding I would be VERY interested in seeing it. It seems to me I have read in the past recommendations on breastmilk only until 1 year, waiting on solids until then, but was unable to confirm when I went looking after his 6 month check. You (or anyone else reading this with information) is welcome to email me at tigaseren1224@yahoo.com or post as a reply to this. Thanks!

I had heard so many different conflicting views about starting solids and wasn’t sure what to do. I recommend this website for all your breastfeeding info http://kellymom.com/ What really convinced me was that the earlier you introduce solids the more likely your child will have food allergies. It is now recommended that families with a history of food allergies delay solids till 1 year. Both my husband and I have food allergies in our families so that is my goal for now.

I exclusively nursed both my boys to 9 months, and then around 10 months they just started eating right off my plate…no baby cereals, mushed food or anything.
My youngest was born at 10lbs4oz…. he did great on just breastmilk for 9 months. Even now at 15 months he still gets a good portion of his nutrition from breastmilk. No cows milk for him yet!

Well, I guess my 4 1/2 month old who weighs 16 pounds should just stop eating altogether! What a stupid comment. I breastfed my first until 11 months (when she got 8 teeth) and I plan to breastfeed the new one as long as I can. By the way, my 2 year old almost never gets sick and has never had an ear infection!

Then I guess they’d never know what to do with my 9 month old, who was exclusively nursed until 6 months (and still is). He’s over 21 pounds! LOL
This reminds me of when he was born – they told me up front, “If their sugars are low, we give them a bottle. We don’t even ask,” or something to that effect. Nice.

I was told at our first checkup that my baby was “in the obese category” (she’d gained 2lb since birth!) and I should cut back on her feedings. I was a 4th time mom, so I just beandipped her, smiled, nodded, and moved on. The same nurse practitioner asked if Fiona had her own bed, and when I replied that she slept with me said “Oh, I can’t have THAT!”. Again, smile, nod, move on. Just wasn’t worth the fight. But a first time mom? What would she have done to the breastfeeding relationship of a first time mom?!

Funny, my 10.5 lb baby is over a year old and has never had formula…
