“Not Everything Is An Act Of Violence…”
“Not everything is an act of violence, you know.” OB to a mother, moments after she delivered a double-footling breech baby over an intact perineum. OB attempted to cut an episiotomy without mother’s knowledge or consent, and stopped only when mother was alerted to episiotomy-in-progress by doula and husband and shouted “I do not consent to an episiotomy!” two times.
The dr tried to cut the episiotomy before my son was born. My son was breech and so there were over a dozen medical staff/gawkers in the room. Too many witnesses for her to ignore my “do not consent” statement. So, she was NOT happy about the push-back and made her snarky comment as I was enjoying holding my son during the first moments of his life. Classy, huh?

Classy, indeed.
You are amazing to have braved all of the gawkers/residents/students/whomever.

It’s true. Not everything is an act of violence. That, however, was.
Just because you learned it in medical school doesn’t make it right.

Well obviously not EVERYTHING is an act of violence, however whacking open a woman’s perineum against her consent IS most definitely an act of violence. Revolting. I am so glad that you were able to speak up and that the doctor stopped. It’s absolutely infuriating that the main reason for complying with the law was only the observers.

Way to refuse!
During my first birth, my doc didn’t even say anything about it until he cut one and I felt the burn of it as my epidural had quit working. Then, the local he used (twice) to sew it back up wouldn’t take, so I got to feel every stitch, too.
Second time, different doc, I had a very small tear and it was a lot better.

I ordered my birth kit the other day and started crying when I was reading over the things my midwife had included in the list. It was the day before Thanksgiving and I was (still am) grateful to be under the care of someone who has Perineal Massage Oil on her list of must haves for a birth, and never once mentioned surgical scissors.

My sister’s doctor did cut her epi AFTER she had delivered her son. Our guess is so he could shove his arm into her and scrape out her placenta instead of letting her expel it on her own. Criminal. If I had been older and know what I know now, I would have led the charge on that lawsuit.

What about my foot or hand (whichever is closer. lol) coming upside your head? THAT is no doubt an act of violence, which is exactly what will happen if you cut me….which is also violent if done on an unconsenting person! I seriously would have kicked my OB if he tried it.

unconsented to episiotomies should be illegal under the anti fgm bill. Disgusting. I’m glad that woman was able to speak up and was listened to!
