“…Otherwise We’ll Have To Call In The OB.”
“We need to get this placenta out by the 30 minute mark, otherwise we’ll have to…” (ominous tone) “call in the OB.” -CNM to mom, as she yanked on the cord.
The only time I ever had a comment about excessive bleeding was when the nurse gave me pit after baby was born and the doc pulled the placenta out. I had some sort of piece of placenta or clot, not sure which. It caused me to be on an IV for a long time after and they wouldn’t let me eat or drink…but no one said they were thinking I might need surgery. Everything settled down, and when they cleaned me off they wouldn’t let me walk to the bathroom alone, I had two nurses walking me. I felt fine, but again, I must have had a lot of blood loss for them to act so worried.

I guess I’m lucky I survived after waiting over 45 minutes for mine to be delivered.
Good thing I was at home, and we were distracted…with the excitement of the baby and all. Perhaps I need to school my doula and midwife as to this ticking placental bomb that we were all so ignorant about.

Did anybody get the woman to sit up, get on a bedpan and empty her bladder, or get her breastfeeding? Asking the woman to cough as you put gentle traction on the cord often works. Sometimes if the woman stands up, the ‘dangerously retained’ placenta falls out onto the floor.
Did anybody do anything else apart from brace themselves with a foot up on the bed and pull with both hands? You do wonder…..

I can understand this comment. In some areas, CNMs are under a lot of pressure and restraints and if they can’t get the job done within very restricted parameters, an OB will have to take over with his much “bigger and better” tools. Perhaps this CNM was trying to save mom from something worse, though obviously, her rushing increased risk to mom.

yes. because at 30 minutes and 1 second that placenta will EXPLODE. it’s just a shame the human race is so scarce because of all those mamas throughout history who died when their placentas totally failed to emerge by the thirty minute mark.
