One of the OB’s in the practice I went to in my first pregnancy assured me that I would be “begging for an epidural in the parking lot.” Saddly that was not enough to make me walk out the door (because she was “SO NICE” otherwise…now that I’m a childbirth educator and doula, I can only imagine how my own CBE/doula was cringing!), but just made me more determined to birth unmedicated.

Fortunately for me, none of the Dr’s from my practice were on call when I went into labor. After my primary OB/GYN stripped my membranes…without consent. Gee, now that was a good idea, send me into labor when you aren’t even going to be on call!

I had a similar experience as this lady when I was in labor with my first child. I made it VERY clear to my doctor and everyone else that would listen that I wanted NO epidural at all (I have scoliosis and my spine curves right where the epidural would go, making it difficult and painful to insert correctly). The nurse that was putting in my IV actually told me I was just being stupid to want a a natural birth with no pain meds. Her next comment was “would you have a tooth pulled without novacain”, to which my response was “if it was better for my unborn child, YES!”. Close minded medical professionals really drive me nuts.
