“Wait! Don’t Push! We Are Not Ready!”
“Wait! Don’t push! We’re not ready!” -OB to mother after breaking her water at 8cm, in order to “speed things up” after mother was at the hospital only two hours. Mother immediately was pushing out her baby!
Thank God my midwife told me to listen to my body and push when I felt I needed to! She was by no means ready and baby was birthed directly onto bed w/o any of those chux pads/tarps to catch all the fluid. When will docs and nurses realize that our bodies know what to do?!?!?!?!

One that happened to me was this:
A lady had phoned earlier in the day to say she thought she was in labour. She was told to phone again when contracting 2 in 10. She phoned at about 2 AM to say she was coming in. When she got to me she said she was a bit embarrassed because it was all fizzling out again. She didn’t want to go home, so I got her a bed on the ward, and suggested I put in a cannula and give IV antibiotics as she was a known Group B streptococcus carrier. So that is what we did. I got the IV in and the antibiotics were in by 2.50 AM. She then wanted to go to the toilet. When she came back (3 AM) she said she wanted to go again. ‘I think it is the baby pressing, rather than you,’ i said. ‘No,’ she replied, jiggling about. ‘I really want to go’. Now, the year before, we had a baby born down the toilet, and I mentioned this to her, saying ‘don’t lock the door, and don’t go in alone.’
I was in her room making the bed when she let out a loud scream. I ran in, closely followed by the Ward Sister. the woman was leaning on the sink, with a little crowning head poking out. This is the point I said, in a loud voice, ‘Don’t Push!’ as we got her into the room. She leant over the bed and gave birth standing up. I had no sterile gloves, my birth pack wasn’t open and all I had on were non sterile gloves, one of which was too small amd made me look like a frog. Baby was out by 3.15 and the placenta (physiological third stage) was out by 3.25. No obvious onset of labour, and the only stage I could really time was the third. But it was (once we got her into the room) a nice natural birth.
Don’t push….we might as well ask it not to rain, or the tide not to come in.

I have been told to stop pushing for 5 of my babies LOL. I go quickly from 8 to pushing. With my third child I begged the dr not to leave me because I knew I would be pushing. She stayed right in my room until time. My first child was a “Code Pink” (hospital speak for a baby is popping out and no one is here to catch it except for a few nurses LOL) She was delivered by a pediatrician who happened to be in the hall LOL. The other three were delivered by nurses. The drs got here in time for placenta. My fifth child the dr walked in AS I was pushing. He asked for the infant table and was told it was prepared and in the hall ROFL He told them the baby was here and could he please have it NOW LOL. All five babies except for the one where doc stayed in the room with me I was told to stop pushing. With #6 afterwards I told the nurse that she might as well ask the wind to stop blowing. She said she was sorry but she “HAS” to request it if there is no dr in the room! It really wasn’t up to me though.. my body was pushing not me
It is funny to me when they say not to push! Yea.. right… not gonna happen.. so either go catch or this baby is gonna be laying on the table. With #6 I was looking for hubs to hold my hand, encourage and support me. He was down at the end of the bed helping the nurse out!!! LOL.

My favorite “don’t push” time came with my #6 birth. I had pushed with an annoying nurse for 1 hour and 1/2. Another nurse was in (and was also acting a bit annoyed with the other nurse who had me push before fully ditated…duh). As I turned on my left side I felt my OP baby turn and then had the incredible urge to push. I pushed and the nurse yelled, “don’t push” but my baby slid out with an intact bag of waters. Immediately the nurse said, “I’m so sorry, I know you cannot stop pushing.” You’re right sister, you all had me pushing for an hour and a half…I thought we were going to get a c-section. No way was I going to stop!
