“…We Can Always Put The Fluid Back In.”
“Well if it becomes a problem, we can always put the fluid back in.” -OB telling mother that he HAD to break her water, and mom asked, “Isn’t the fluid important to protect the baby?”
Well, technically they can do an amnioinfusion with saline–which can introduce bacteria among other issues, and just isn’t amniotic fluid. Plus it will leak back out through the GREAT BIG HOLE IN THE MEMBRANES. If this doc had wanted to sound smart, he/she could have said “amniotic fluis continuously replenishes itself, so you’re never empty.” If he/she had wanted to sound REALLY smart, he/she could have said “there’s no real reason to do that-data shows it doesn’t really do much to augment labor most of the time and the baby is safer with the membranes intact.”

Actually I had this done…my water had broken on its own, and rather than have a c section nearly 36 hours later we did this to help support the baby. She was beginning to decel a bit and this helped. She was born 50 hours after water breaking as VBA2C. I am not for intervetions but this beats a c section!

So… if the Doctor wants to remove the fluid, it’s no biggie, he’ll just put it back in.
But if it breaks on its own, you had better have that kid out right away because ALL THE FLUID IS GONE! OH NOES!!!
This is another one for the “Make up your mind!” category.
