“…Either We Do An Incision Down There Or We Do An Incision Up There.”
“It’s really not that big a deal… think of it this way… either we do an incision down there (nodding towards her perineum) or we do an incision up there (nodding towards her belly). It’s basically the same thing.”-OB consoling a mother about her upcoming cesarean.
My jaw literally dropped reading this one. It’s NOT the same thing at all, but this comment really gives a window into what goes on in the brains of doctors with high rates of surgical birth in their practices.
This is why we need midwives for births without complications, and save the surgeons for the backup team when we actually NEED surgery. It seems to work well in countries where birth is handled this way. Their mortality rates are better than in the US, where most births are handled by surgeons regardless of the need for surgery.

Uhm…there is always the natural choice to let the body do what it will. I’ve had one birth with one stitch, one with a lot of tearing. I’ve had four biths without any tearing at all. Some women don’t tear ever.

In three vaginal births, I never tore once, never had an episiotomy.

And my 10lb 2oz baby came out just fine with no tearing

I see the hospital’s sensitivity training is really paying off.
