“…Oh, That’s Not The Baby…”
“Here comes the baby! Oh, that’s not the baby, that’s poop! Ha, ha, ha.” -OB to mother during pushing.
No, “Lady,” it isn’t funny because a significant number of women are self conscious about the possibility of pooping during pushing. Such a comment can really mess with a woman’s psychological ability to push.
A tactful maternity care worker simply cleans up the mess with no fuss, and pretends it didn’t happen.

I’ve given birth three times, but thanks for the primer on women’s psychology. I agree that the doctor shouldn’t have said anything, but I also think you and many other women on this site take yourselves way too seriously. A woman who has ever heard anything about childbirth knows pooping is often involved; why such hangups about something very natural and part of the process? It’s just a little poo!

I’m with you, Lady! Everybody poops, for God’s sake! Why would anyone be all like, “OMG, I’m pooping? Well, I’ll just stop pushing then! Pain over poop!”

Okay, I’m totally ALL for having a sense of humor about things (especially bodily functions), but I was molested as a child and have issues related to that. Pooping during childbirth was extremely humiliating to me for that reason and if my caregiver had said things like that I would have been crushed.

It happens more often than it doesn’t, I have to say. As the baby descends it is the biggest thing in the woman’s pelvis, and anything else in the way gets pushed out too. Women worry about it nearly as much as pain, but it is normal. The women who say it didn’t happen to them just didn’t notice the midwife cleaning them up. There is no need to draw attention to it though- it’s humiliating enough without making a joke of it.
If we want to be seen as professionals, we ought to act in a professional way, don’t you think?

My body completely cleaned itself out the 24 hours before the birth, I really didn’t poop at all while during the pushing phase. (and it wasn’t just the midwife cleaning it before I noticed, I was in the water pushing and midwife was not down there) So it doesn’t always happen, but I wouldn’t have been bothered if it had.
