I agree with Rachel about CNMs & hospitals. My first midwife was a home-birthing CNM, so I know there are some traditional midwives among CNMs; but some midwives are restricted or restrained by either the law or the local hospital (having to toe the line in order to maintain privileges), so have to drift towards the medical model of care.

Plus, some midwives are just hospital-based L&D nurses who are “advancing their career” (or whatever) to become a hospital-based CNM, and are no more committed to the midwifery model of care than the man in the moon.

TJ and Jennifer – I believe when I was reading Ina Mays Guide to Childbirth she listed CNM’s as a category to be a bit more iffy with. That CNM’s often work out of a hospital and are generally more in line with hospital based care (because of the pressures put on them by their hospital) rather than traditional midwifery care. Not that you can’t have a great CNM but that you should interview them more carefully so you know what you are getting.

I don’t have that book handy at the moment so I can’t check to be sure but that has stood out to me every time I’ve seen a CNM quote on this site.

@ TJ haven’t you noticed the large number of CNM’s represented on this site? I’m not sure what they are being trained in, but evidently it is not the midwives philosophy of care.
