“You’ll Have To Be Pushing By 1:00…”
“You’ll have to be pushing by 1, I have some place to be at 2 this afternoon.” -OB to woman on pitocin induction who was also having her membranes ruptured at 2cm dilation.
There is an OB in my area who is well-known for this type of thing. Anyone in labor on a Friday afternoon will either have birthed by 5pm… or will have had a surgical birth by 8.
When it’s close to vacation time, anyone over 36 weeks will be induced so the covering physician doesn’t get the credit.
Some doctors are great, but the ones who want to fit births into their schedules give a bad name to those who actually care about the well-being of moms and babies.

Yeah, I had a doula client who’s OB wanted to induce her at 38 weeks so he could deliver her before he went on his 2 week trip to Italy! I was so proud of my client when she told him no way. She birthed her beautiful daughter 2 days after her due date with the on call doctor. She even said “I’m not going to get induced just so he gets paid!”

This was my submission though it wasn’t my birth (thank goodness) but a doula client. It was such a frustrating experience for me but oddly enough, the mother and the family didn’t seem to mind. I did everything I could to help them make well0informed choices but they went with doing everything their dr. or the nurses said even still. The thing is though, it does “work.” They do and say these things because often it does work and gets them home in time for dinner, their golf game, or whatever else they want. This mom had a green cervix, a low Bishop score and yet they got her baby out and by most standards everyone was “ok.” As long as women abdicate their responsibility in their births and pitting babies to distress, AROM at 2cms, and epis get babies out things aren’t going to change. It blows my mind but that is what some women want! What I appreciate about this site is that regardless of what a woman wants for herself there is a light being shone on how laboring and birthing women are treated. Even if you can’t get your epidural soon enough and love the fetal monitor, etc. nobody deserves to be yelled at, harassed, threatened or belittled. To tell a woman she has to be pushing by a certain time (a first time mom, no less!) and have that time be less than the expected average just because the dr. wants her done by then is inexcusable! Just goes to show who that OB thinks birth really is all about.

oh my! I was 10 cm for 9.5hours before my water broke. he wouldn’t have liked me one bit! my twin on the other hand had her membranes ruptured when she was 9cm (without consent!!!!) the nurse informed her she had to have the baby out in an hour. well the labor stalled then they hauled her off to the butcher against her will. bah!

It’s not only insane that this OB thinks it would be okay to actually think they can keep a rigid schedule when they are in the business of delivering babies – but then to actually SAY it to the mothers face?? WTF!?
